Andy Spyra

Andy Spyra (* 1984 in Hagen ) is a German photographer and photojournalist. Spyra became known for his mostly black and white photographs from crisis regions.

Life

After graduating from high school in Hagen, Spyra traveled through Central America and Southeast Asia, where he discovered his love for photography. Then he decided to become a professional photographer and worked as a freelance photographer for a newspaper in Hagen for a year. From 2007 to 2009 he studied photo journalism and documentary photography at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences .

Spyra is known for his pictures from Kashmir , the Middle East and Bosnia , which he took with a Holga , a very cheap plastic medium format camera. He works on long-term projects in the Balkans, Africa and the Middle East.

His photos appear in TIME Magazine , in GEO , in Stern , in FAZ , in Spiegel , der Zeit , One-Mag, in Middle East Report, the 360 ° Journal , in Profifoto , Photo International, Foto8, GUP, Rearviewmirror, LFI -Leica Photography International, GommaMag, NEON , for GlobalPost , Zenith, in der Welt am Sonntag , Newsweek , The New Yorker , Il Espresso and others.

In March 2018, ZEITmagazin devoted an entire issue to a report by Wolfgang Bauer and Andy Spyra about a fortress in Afghanistan that is supposed to guard a village.
