Angelika Brandt (born December 6, 1961 ) is a German marine biologist . She is an expert Antarctic deep sea - biodiversity and planned, organized and led several oceanographic expeditions in the Antarctic , which have significantly contributed to the understanding of the Antarctic and deep-sea biology. She is National Geographic Society ’s Adventurer of the Year 2007 and senior scientist of the ANDEEP (ANtarctic benthic DEEP-sea biodiversity) project, which is dedicated to the study of benthic organisms in the Antarctic deep sea.

Youth and education

Born in Minden , she studied biology and pedagogy at the University of Oldenburg and completed her diploma in pedagogy in 1985 . In 1986 she passed the examination as a research diver at the University of Kiel and did her doctorate in 1991 with the paper On the settlement history of the Antarctic shelf using the example of the Isopoda (Crustacea, Malacostraca) , which was awarded its science prize by the Annette-Barthelt Foundation .

Career and impact

Brandt's research focus is the macrofauna of the deep sea and polar regions . In this broad field, she examines the biodiversity , systematics , biogeography and evolution of deep-sea isopods ( Crustacea , Malacostraca ) with a special focus on benthic systems.

After completing a postdoc at the University of Kiel , she was appointed professor of special zoology at the University of Hamburg in 1995 . In 2003 she became deputy director and from 2004 to 2009 director of the zoological museum of the University of Hamburg, where she curated the invertebrates II department ( Crustacea and Polychaeta ).

In 2017 Brandt moved from the Center for Natural History (CeNaK) to the Senckenberg Museum Frankfurt and is also professor of marine zoology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt . She took part in over 20 expeditions to the polar regions , including the maiden voyage of the research vessel Sonne in 2014/2015.

Brandt is and was active in numerous committees, including the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS), Scientific Committee of Antarctic Research (SCAR) and a member of the Steering Committee of the CoML projects CeDAMar (Census of the Diversity of Abyssal Marine Life) and CAML (Census of the Antarctic Marine Life). She reviews for Nature, among others, and is a reviewer for the DFG , DAAD and NERC (National Environmental Research Council).

Awards and honors

In addition to the science award of the Annette-Barthelt Foundation , she received the SCAR Medal for Excellences in Polar Sciences 2008. She has been one of 50 foreign and 25 British fellows of the Linnean Society since 2003 . Her Nature Publication on the ANDEEP results was rated as one of the Top 10 Scientific Results of 2007 by Time Magazine, and she was selected as the National Geographic Society's Adventurer of the Year 2007.
