The painter is mainly known for her large-format depictions of men, the main motif of her life-size figure paintings. They show the man as an androgynous, narcissistic and very vulnerable, but also very desirable being. Jean-Christophe Ammann describes this reversal of the gaze: “The reversal that Anke Doberauer practices is a challenge for the 'masculinity' category. It infiltrates this category. The reversal has consequences. The male observer feels 'exposed'. If the author of the picture were an artist, the male viewer could distance himself from this or his desire. Since an artist is at work, he must first of all accept her desire as that of a woman in the form of a work of art. "

Doberauer developed other image forms in addition to the early male images. She portrays objects, flowers, animals, people and finally landscapes. These are always painted plein-air and often designed as multi-part panoramas. The work on creating the greatest possible presence of color, light and depicted people led to painting in the form of wall painting.

In the meantime, panel paintings have the same dimensions as wall paintings. Since 2001, monumental panoramas have been created, the foreground of which is formed from life-size back figures serving as repoussoirs. The almost nine-meter-long work 'Sunset', installed in a room box, was shown at Art Unlimited at Art Basel 37 . In 2006, the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art on Mönchsberg featured a room with the Budapest ensemble “Count Robert Palffy” and “14 Researchers”.

Doberauer also became known for her portraits of the rectors of the University of Jena ( Eight Magnifications , 1997) and the series of portraits of international humanities scholars ( 14 researchers , 1998), as well as her monumental panorama pictures (Sunset, 2006).
