Anne of Perusse d'Escars
Anne de Perusse d'Escars de Givry OSB (born March 29, 1546 in Paris , † April 19, 1612 in Vic-sur-Seille ) was cardinal and bishop of Metz .
He was the son of Jacques de Pérusse, Seigneur d'Escars, and his second wife, Françoise de Longwy, dame de Givry , ( House Chaussin ).
After completing his studies, he entered the Benedictine abbey of Saint Bénigne in Dijon . He was elected abbot in the abbeys of Dijon, Barbery , Molesme , Poultières and Champagne in the diocese of Le Mans .
In the Wars of Religion he was a follower of Henri I de Lorraine .
He was appointed Bishop of Lisieux on October 1, 1584 and consecrated on May 1, 1585. Since the diocese was badly affected by the wars of religion, he stayed in Rome for a long time . Pope Clement VIII. Elevated him to cardinal in 1596 and gave him the titular church of Santa Susanna . Although King Henry IV disagreed with the appointment of a Guise supporter as cardinal, he still held the Peruvians in high regard.
On March 17, 1599 he resigned from his episcopal office, but was elected coadjutor on March 3, 1603 with the right of succession as Bishop of Langres . The office was held by his older brother Charles d'Escars de Pérusse. On May 23, 1608 he was elected Bishop of Metz , whose office he took up on September 10 of that year. He died on April 19, 1612 in Vic-sur-Seille Castle on the Moselle and is buried in Metz Cathedral.
