The 2015 terrorist attack in Ankara was a terrorist attack involving two suicide bombings in the Turkish capital Ankara on October 10, 2015. 102 people died and more than 500 were injured in the explosion of the two explosive devices. It is the worst terrorist attack in the history of Turkey. It is believed that the terrorist organization Islamic State carried out the attack. Both assassins belonged to the IS environment. But there was no commitment by the terrorist organization.

Sequence of events

An alliance of left parties and trade unions called for a peace demonstration on October 10 in Ankara. The goal of the march that was forming was Sihhiye Square in Ankara. At around 10 a.m. local time, two explosive devices exploded during the demonstration .

Background and reactions

Due to its geographical location as a frontline state on the border with Syria , where a civil war has been raging for years between the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and various opposition groups, Turkey is exposed to severe strains. The terrorist organization "Islamic State" has particularly spread near Turkey's southeast border. Around 2.5 million Syrian refugees live in Turkey, many of them from the Kurdish region of Rojava, which has been devastated by IS . The fight for Kobanê ended in early 2015 with a withdrawal of ISIS.

In the parliamentary elections in June 2015 , the HDP, with 13.1 percent, was the first Kurdish party to overcome the 10 percent threshold and enter the national parliament. Non-Kurdish Turks had also voted for the party because they opposed Erdoğan's plans to introduce a presidential regime.

The incumbent government classified the attack as an act of terrorism and ordered a three-day state mourning after the attack. In a statement, Prime Minister Davutoğlu said that these were two suicide bombings in which one of the attackers was almost identified. In view of the allegations made against his government by some of the organizers of the demonstration, he accused them of wanting to incite the people against the state and called the allegations a "provocation". According to media reports, the investigators suspect the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS), as one of the attackers shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is great) shortly before and the explosives are very similar to the explosives from the attack in Suruç .

According to the HDP, she herself was the target of the double attack, the bombs detonated in the midst of HDP supporters. According to the HDP, eyewitnesses reported that there were two suicide bombers. The co-chairman of the HDP, Selahattin Demirtaş , spoke of a massacre. The incident is similar to the attacks in Diyarbakır and Suruç : members of his party wanted to take part in a rally and were then victims of an attack. The demonstrators blamed the government and the so-called “ deep state ” allegedly associated with it for the attacks.

The victims are remembered with a photo wall on the sidewalk in front of the train station in Ankara. According to lawyers for the bereaved, the memorial has been desecrated several times and the application for a more worthy memorial has been rejected.

Investigations

On October 14, 2015, the names of the suicide bombers were published by the Turkish government. One of the suicide bombers was also the brother of the attacker in the Suruç attack . Both brothers fought for the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). In addition to the names of the two alleged assassins, the press also stated that they belonged to a group from the Kurdish majority, Adıyaman , named after one of its leaders, Mustafa Dokumacı, the Dokumacı group. The group is also blamed for the attack in Suruç and a bomb attack on an election rally in Diyarbakır just before Turkey’s general election in June 2015 . Since the police already had information about the attackers and their surroundings, but the attack could not be prevented, the police chief in Ankara and the head of the police intelligence service there were suspended.
