António Bernardo da Costa Cabral, 2nd Conde de Tomar (born May 23, 1835 - February 19, 1903 ) was a Portuguese nobleman and diplomat who inherited the title of 2nd Conde de Tomar in 1889 .

Life

António Bernardo da Costa Cabral, son of António Bernardo da Costa Cabral , 1st Marquês de Tomar, 1st Conde de Tomar, studied philosophy at the University of Coimbra , graduating with a bachelor's degree in filosofia . He then joined the diplomatic service of the State Department and was appointed second attaché to the embassy in the USA on March 19, 1859 . After he was on vacation in Portugal from December 1860 to April 1861, on August 2, 1861, he became Second Attaché to the Legation in the Kingdom of Italy , based in Turin . He was then on 12 September 1862 Second attaché at the embassy in the Kingdom of Belgium and changed on December 2, 1863 as First Secretary at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Italy, where he occasionally also charge d'affaires was ad interim. On April 26, 1866 he was appointed Secretary of the Legation and on July 19, 1866, he moved to the Foreign Ministry. On July 19, 1867 he was temporarily secretary to Foreign Minister José Maria do Casal Ribeiro during a special mission in Spain .

On January 24, 1868, Costa Cabral was appointed legation secretary at the embassy in the Empire of Brazil and returned as first secretary to the embassy in the Kingdom of Italy on June 25, 1870 , where he was also ad interim chargee several times in the following years. On August 27, 1874, he was appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in the Kingdom of Belgium. After his return he became special envoy of the Foreign Ministry on August 8, 1881, and made trips to the German Empire and Italy in the following years .

After the death of his father António Bernardo da Costa Cabral on September 1, 1889, he inherited the title created on September 1, 1845 as 2nd Conde de Tomar , while the title created on July 11, 1878 as Marquês de Tomar expired. On January 15, 1890, he became Par do Reino and thereby a member of the Câmara dos Digníssimos Pares do Reino , the upper house of Parliament ( Cortes ) , of which he was a member until his death on February 19, 1903. He was active as a member of parliament and dealt with issues of gas and water supply by the Companhias das Águas e do Gás and was one of the opponents of using the Torre de Belém as a gas container .

For his services, he was commander of the Order of Our Lady (Ordem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Vila Viçosa) and also received the Grand Cross of the Order of Gregory , the Order of the Oak Crown , the Order of the Dutch Lion and the Order of the Leopold of Belgium . On October 3, 1866, António Bernardo da Costa Cabral married Sofia Adelaide Dias de Sousa, daughter of Bartolomeu dos Mártires Dias de Sousa and his wife Maria Fortunata de Oliveira. From this marriage went his son Bartolomeu Dias e Sousa da Costa Cabral, who inherited the title of 3rd Cone de Tomar after his death .
