Life

The son of the pastor and teacher of ancient languages Nicolas Antoine Franchimont (born August 1, 1808 in Leiden; † November 28, 1858 there) and the Theodora Aleida Poppe (born December 12, 1815 in Cortgene; † December 28, 1879 in Leiden) , had received his first education from his father. Then he attended the grammar school in Leiden in 1856. In 1859 he trained as a pharmacist in Leiden and The Hague . After completing his training, he became a self-employed pharmacist in Leiden in 1864. After receiving his university admission in 1868, he studied natural sciences at the University of Leiden with Pieter Leonard Rijke , Willem Frederik Reinier Suringar and Pieter van Geer . In 1869 he sold his pharmacy and became a chemistry teacher at the Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix evening school in Leiden. In Leiden he received his doctorate on March 24, 1871 with the subject Bijdrage tot de kennis van het ontstaan en de chemical constitutie der zoogenaamde terpeenharsen (contributions to the knowledge and the chemical composition of turpentine) under Antonius Henricus van der Boon Mesch as a doctor of philosophy.

He then continued his studies at the University of Bonn , where in August 1872 he worked for some time as assistant to August Kekulé and from August 1873 worked in the same capacity with Charles Adolphe Wurtz in Paris. In 1873 he returned to his Dutch homeland, became a chemistry teacher at the agricultural HBS in Wageningen and on February 6, 1874 he was appointed associate professor of organic chemistry at the University of Leiden. He took on this task on May 2, 1874 with the inaugural speech De verschillende richtingen der chemie. Look in het verleden, het heden en de toekomst dier wetenschap (The different directions of chemistry. Glances into the past, present and future of animal science). On October 16, 1877, he became a full professor of organic chemistry and, in 1889/90, as rector of the alma mater, also took part in the university's organizational tasks. He set this task with the speech De org. Chemie een kind dezer eeuw (Organic chemistry a child of this century).

He was co-founder and editor of the scientific journal Recueil des Travaux Chimiques des Pays-Bas et de la Belgique . His research dealt with sugar and acetylation . In 1883 he discovered the nitrogen compounds in nitrosamines . The Franchimont condensation , which he discovered in 1872, is named after him. Franchimont had written numerous specialist papers in the German, French and Dutch languages. He was also a member of several international and Dutch learned societies. On May 8, 1879, he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam , a member of the Dutch Society of Sciences in Haarlem, a member of the Batavian Society for Experimental Philosophy in Rotterdam, and an honorary member of the Royal Institution of Great Britain and Ireland in 1899, a corresponding member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science , 1889 member of the Chemical Society in London, member of the German Chemical Society in Berlin , 1890 member of the Societe Chimique in Paris and 1912 honorary member of the Royal Dutch Chemical Association. He was also a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion from 1900 and a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1890 . He retired from his professorship on June 26, 1914 and retired on September 21, 1914.

Franchimont married on January 8, 1880 in Leiden with Cornelia van Batenburg (born August 28, 1837 in Mourik, † June 28, 1932 in Leiden), the daughter of Ocker van Batenburg and Christina Adriana Riebel. The marriage remained childless.

Arnold F. Holleman was one of his PhD students .
