Anton Cordel was born in Pfalzel (now Trier) as the fifth child of the married couple Konrad Cordel and Anna Magdalena, née Fusenich. He was considered hardworking and talented. After completing his school education, he studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Trier . On March 27, 1784 he was ordained a priest in Trier and then took up a position as private tutor for the von Pidoll family in Quint near Trier.

In 1785 he was curate vicar of Udelfangen and 1786 of St. Walburgis. In 1786 he became a canon in Trier St. Paulin and pastor / curate vicar in Trier St. Walburgis. In 1793 Cordel took up the position of pastor in the Trier parish of St. Antonius and in 1793 became a synod examiner .

In 1794 Cordel was entrusted with the commissariat for the Luxembourg parishes; In 1795 Cordel was the city ​​dean of Trier. In 1796 Anton Cordel was appointed Apostolic Protonotary by the Pope . In 1800 he was accepted as a canonicus in the St. Paulin monastery . However, he did not take up this position because the monastery was dissolved by secularization and the French occupation of Triers.

In 1803, Cordel became cathedral chapter and second vicar general under Charles Mannay . After the death of Josef von Hontheim Cordel was first vicar general (1807-1816). From 1807 to 1824 Cordel also worked as cathedral priest and from 1810 to 1824 as cathedral dean . From 1812 Cordel acted as an authorized representative of Bishop Mannay, who was no longer in Trier. Cordel led the entire diocese by himself until 1816 and was elected vicar by the cathedral chapter on November 18, 1816 .

In 1817 he became Episcopal Vicar for the Prussian parishes. In 1818 Pius VII appointed him apostolic vicar for the parishes that had been separated from the diocese of Metz and assigned to the diocese of Trier. Cordel's powers of attorney expired in 1824 when Josef von Hommers was introduced as Bishop of Trier. From 1824 Cordel was provost of the new Trier cathedral chapter and in the same year he was again vicar general.

In 1810, with the support of Napoleon , Bishop Mannay had the Holy Rock , which had been brought to Augsburg by Elector Clemens Wenzeslaus because of the turmoil of the war, brought back to Trier. Anton Cordel and Canon Johann Michael Schimper managed the return transport.

Anton Cordel died on March 29, 1826 in Trier and was buried in the St. Paulin cemetery. The tomb is still there.
