Anton Heyboer (born February 9, 1924 in Sabang ( Aceh Province ), Indonesia , † April 9, 2005 in Den Ilp , Landsmeer municipality , Netherlands ) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist . He is one of the most important representatives of abstract art and printmaking after the Second World War .

Life

Anton Heyboer was in the north of Sumatra , the son of a mechanical - engineer born. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Haarlem ; in 1925 to Delft and 1929 to Voorburg . From 1933 to 1938 they lived on Curaçao , then for a time in New York . Anton Heyboer was trained as a mechanical engineer. After the beginning of the Second World War he returned to Haarlem. In 1943 Heyboer was forced to work in Germany and spent seven months in the Prenzlauer Berg transit camp in Berlin . Then he returns to Haarlem.

After the war he moved to Borger in the Netherlands . Heyboer lived in the south of France for a few months in the late 1940s / early 1950s. Here he began painting intensively . He met the painter Jan Kagie  jr. (1907–1991), who influenced his art. In 1951 Heyboer was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Santpoort near Bloemendaal for some time because he began to withdraw into himself very strongly. In the 1950s and 1960s his art received international attention. He was a participant in documenta 2 in 1959 and also in documenta 3 (1964) in Kassel , both in the graphics department . In 1961 Anton Heyboer moved to Den Ilp , where he lived and worked until his death. His wife took care of the marketing and sales of his works of art.

Anton Heyboer was not only known for his artistic work in the Netherlands, but also for living with a total of five women. He lived in a commune in Den Ilp with Maria, Lotti, Marike, Joke and Petra (who all had a career as a model behind them) . This extravagant lifestyle received a lot of attention in the Dutch tabloid press . On April 10, 2002 Heyboer was made Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau .
