Anton Lumpert (born November 13, 1757 in the hamlet of Köglen, municipality of Elbigenalp ( Tyrol ), † April 10, 1837 in Vienna ) was an Austrian civil servant and local politician .

Life

Lumpert was the son of a merchant who appointed his son for the clergy. Lumpert, which also an uncle of the artist Anton Falger was (1791-1876), but after studying grammar school in 1780 at the University of Vienna Law and entered 1783 in the Vienna city council , where he received a 1786 first systemized Registrantenstelle. In 1789 he became legal recorder of the Criminal Senate, in 1791 a secretary and in 1795 finally a criminal adviser.

From 1814 Anton Lumpert was vice mayor of Vienna and was appointed mayor on December 9, 1823 . That year he was also appointed to the Imperial Council. However, his term of office was not a good star. On the one hand, he patronized the magistrate and the city officials very palpably, on the other hand, he was ignorant of administrative matters, which led to irregularities in this area and a disturbed relationship between the magistrate and the population. When one of the biggest Danube floods occurred in 1830 during Lumpert's term of office and a cholera epidemic in Vienna in 1831/32, criticism of him became louder and louder. Under the pressure of events in 1831, he began to build the right Vienna river collecting canal and then in 1834 with the left collecting canal, as it became clear that the epidemic had its origin in the suburbs of Vienna. Finally, Emperor Ferdinand I had enough of Lumpert's suboptimal administration and caused him to retire in September 1834.

After his death, Lumpert was buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof . In Vienna- Wieden (4th district) Lumpertgasse was named after him, but was renamed Kettenbrückengasse as early as 1862 . There is a memorial plaque on the house at Kleine Sperlgasse 10 in Vienna- Leopoldstadt , as well as a plaque in his place of birth.
