Anton Schrödl was born in Schwechat, Lower Austria, in 1820. The ancestor of the imperial toll collector in Ybbs, Hans Schrötel von Schröttenstein, can be traced back to 1428. His father Joseph Schrödl was an iron merchant on Wienerstrasse in the market town of Schwechat, which at that time had 2,000 inhabitants , his older brother Norbert Michael Schrödl (1816–1890) was an ivory carver and sculptor , whose sons were the painter Norbert Schrödl (1842–1912) and the sculptor Leopold Schrödl (1841-1908). Anton Schrödl grew up in the poorest of circumstances, whereupon his parents decided to transfer the guardianship to the relative Wetschel. At the age of thirteen he attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under the professor of flower painting Sebastian Wegmayr (1776–1857) and was awarded the Gundel Prize in 1835 .

On behalf of the zoologist Gustav Jäger , he designed the Tiergarten am Schüttel in the Vienna Prater in 1864 . He designed a Pinzgau landscape, the Schrödlalm, for the Kuffner family in the 16th district of Ottakring in Vienna . Together with the polar explorer and art patron Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek , Schrödl traveled to the North African state of Algeria in 1870 . The Viennese cloth merchant and art collector Friedrich Jakob Gsell (1812–1871) also had some works by Schrödl in his private collection.

Although he never accepted a professorship at the academy, he still taught students such as Johann Nepomuk Geller (1860–1954), Alphons Leopold Mielich (1863–1929), Alfred Jirasek (1863–1931) and Gustav Ranzoni (1826–1900). Schrödl was friends with the painters Emil Jakob Schindler (1842–1892) and Tina Blau (1845–1916).
