Anton Freiherr von Zach (born June 14, 1747 in Pest ; † November 22, 1826 in Graz ) was an Austrian officer with Hungarian ancestors, most recently Feldzeugmeister , knight of the Order of Theresa and lifelong owner of Infantry Regiment No. 15.

Life

He was born as the son of the doctor József Zach (Protomedicus of the Invalidenhaus in Pest, raised to the nobility in 1765 under Maria Theresa ) and Klára Szontágh in 1747 in Pest. In July 1765 he joined the genius corps as a cadet , was promoted to lieutenant and in 1783 to captain . After studying at the engineering faculty, he became a professor at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt in 1778 . During the war against the Turks he was at Loudon's headquarters. On the night of October 6th to 7th, 1789, Zach was commissioned to set up a battery on the island of war, which damaged the Belgrade Fortress so favorably that the transfer of the Pasha in command was quicker. Captain Zach earned the higher rank of major from the latter success .

Coalition wars

With the beginning of the First Coalition War , Zach set up an independent pioneer corps in the Austrian Netherlands in the spring of 1793 . He distinguished himself in the Battle of Famars (May 23, 1793) and in the successful siege of Valenciennes (May 24 - July 28, 1793), then he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . When he stormed the Mainz lines on October 29, 1795, he proved his military technical ability to such an extent that he was assigned to the general staff of Feldzeugmeister Beaulieu's army the following year . In 1796 he came to Mantua under Wurmser's command , where he again proved himself in the defense of the fortress. The campaign of 1799 clearly demonstrated his suitability for a general career. In the Battle of Legnano on March 26 and at Magnano on April 5, he took part as a troop leader and was promoted to major general in June 1799 . He then became Chief of Staff of the Kray Army , after the reconquest of Mantua he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Allied Army in Italy on July 27th.

For his achievements in the Battle of Novi (August 25, 1799) he received the Military Order of Maria Theresa in his 58th doctorate on October 13, 1799 . In 1799 he became chief of staff of the Italian army and played a major role in the victory at Genola (November 4, 1799), where the French Italian army was defeated under Championnet . After the defeat of General Melas in the Battle of Marengo (June 14, 1800), he fell into French captivity. After the Peace of Lunéville he was raised to the baron status on February 4, 1801. During the campaign of 1805 he again served as Quartermaster General in the Italian Army, he took part in the Battle of Caldiero (October 29–31, 1805) under Archduke Karl and was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal on September 1, 1805 . In January 1806 he was appointed military governor of Trieste and in 1808 was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Leopold Order . In the 1809 campaign he was first in the Italian army under Archduke Johann and besieged Palmanova , on June 26, 1809 he led a division under FML Gyulay during the siege of Graz at the meeting of St. Leonhard. In October 1810 he was appointed deputy and in 1813 commander of the Olomouc Fortress . On March 1, 1825, in the 60th year of his military service, he was appointed Feldzeugmeister and retired on November 22nd. Zach was considered an expert in the field of surveying technology. His military experience and instructions for field fortification appeared in several scientific papers, and he also published writings on the cosmology of the earth and the planets. Zach spent the last years of his life in Graz, where his life ended in 1826.

family

Zach married Anna Freiin von Moltke (1759-1832) on June 29, 1779 in Wiener Neustadt. The daughter Theresa married Auguste Milliet de Faverges et de Challes (1780-1854). A second daughter Maria Angelika Wilhelmine (1784–1855) married Colonel Franz Xaver Richter von Binnenthal (1768–1840) in 1802 . A third daughter Josepha (1781–1857) married the later Theresienritter and FML Ignaz Freiherr von Reinisch (June 9, 1768 - September 23, 1843).
