Antoni Ros i Marbà , also in the surname spelling Ros Marbà or Ros-Marbà , (born April 2, 1937 in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat ) is a Catalan conductor and composer.

life and work

Ros i Marbà studied at the Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona and was a student of Eduard Toldrà . He was also a student of Sergiu Celibidache at the Academia Chiggiana in Siena and Jean Martinon in Düsseldorf. In 1965 he was appointed director of the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and held this position until 1967. From 1967 to 1987 he was head of the orchestra of the city of Barcelona on several occasions (1967–1978, 1981–1986). From 1978 to 1981 he was musical director of the Spanish National Orchestra. In 1989 he was appointed director of the Teatro Real de Madrid.

Ros i Marbà also built a significant international career. In 1978 he made his debut with the Berliner Symphoniker at the invitation of Herbert von Karajan . From 1979 he was director of the Dutch Chamber Orchestra . Then he was its main guest conductor. In addition, he led the most important orchestras in France, England, Switzerland and Italy and achieved great success with them. In the field of opera he achieved impressive successes with the performance of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Richard Strauss , Giuseppe Verdi , Giacomo Puccini , Richard Wagner , Alban Berg , Benjamin Britten and Leoš Janáček . The world premieres of the operas Duenna by Robert Gerhard and Divinas palabras by Antón García Abril are remarkable .

He mainly recorded works by Catalan and Spanish composers on recordings, such as the Goyescas by Enric Granados , works by Frederic Mompou and Xavier Montsalvatge , and numerous Zarzuelas such as Doña Francisquita , Bohemios and La Verbena de la Paloma .

As a composer he performed the cantatas for children's choir Tirant lo Blanc (1977). In 1965 Ros i Marbà received the Prix ​​International du Disque Arthur Honegger for his recording of the Seven Words of Christ by Josef Haydn . In 1988 he was awarded the Creu-de-Sant-Jordi by the Generalitat de Catalunya . In 1989 he was awarded the National Music Prize of the Spanish Ministry of Culture and in 2012 the gold medal of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, of which he has been director several times since the 1965/1967 concert season. Since the beginning of 2001 he has been director of the Real Filharmonía de Galicia .
