Antonino Lombardo

Antonino Lombardo (born May 4, 1912 in Agira , Enna province, † March 31, 1985 ) was an Italian archivist who mainly dealt with the Venetian late Middle Ages and the sources of trade that arose there. From 1963 to 1985 he was President of the Associazione Nazionale Archivistica Italiana .

His family moved to Catania , where he attended the Liceo Spedaliero and studied law at the University of Catania . He earned his laureate in Roman law . First he was assistant for the history of Roman law at Mario Chiaudano , won a tender from the state archives in 1935 and then went to Trieste , then Trento and Bolzano to work in Venice .

There he worked with his colleague Raimondo Morozzo della Rocca, first on notary archives, then on commercial law. Together they published three source volumes with Venetian trade documents and the archives of various notaries from Crete and from Candia , Koron and Famagusta . From 1957 to 1967 he edited the archives of overarching bodies, such as the Council of Forty (Quarantia). The oldest surviving volume contains the resolutions of 1342/1347. The volumes are in poor condition. Antonino Lombardo prepared the three-volume edition, which covers the period from 1342 to 1368.

In addition to his archival and publication activities in Venice, Lombardo also taught palaeography and diplomatics from 1976 to 1979 at the University of L'Aquila and from 1976 to 1982 archival studies at the University of Pisa . Lombardo was finally appointed Ispettore generale , with which he supervised all state archives and also visited them. At the same time, he was a member of the Consiglio generale degli archivi and the national council of the Ministry of Cultural Property . He was active all his life in southern Italy, especially in the Salentino. He was a member of the Società di Storia Patria di Bari , the Science Council of the Centro di Studi Salentini and co-founder of the Società Storica di Terra d'Otranto .
