Antonio Porta (architect)

Antonio Porta (* around 1631 in Manno near Lugano ; † August 3, 1702 in Bayreuth , buried as "Italus artifex") was a Swiss builder , architect and contractor.

Life and works

In addition to the new castle in Neustadt an der Waldnaab , he created buildings in Bohemia , Silesia and Northern Bavaria . From 1662 he was the master builder of the Grafenegg estate near Wagram , from 1668 to Prince Wenzel Eusebius von Lobkowicz , who gave him the portraits of members of the Princely House kept in the house of Porta Manno . Porta was involved in the construction of the Lobkowicz castles in Sagan and Raudnitz . The pilgrimage church of St. Quirin in Püchersreuth was built according to his plans in 1678 .

In 1697 he was appointed to Bayreuth by Margrave Christian Ernst . From 1698 he fundamentally rebuilt the collegiate church (today parish church) of the Himmelkron monastery . In 1700, together with Jacques Bourdin de la Fond, he designed plans for the castle of Margrave Friedrich in Erlangen . In the same year, the Baroque transformation of the Evangelical Lutheran parish church of St. James in Creußen took place under his leadership .

He donated his fortune for pious works, as well as for young people from Manno who wanted to study art in Rome
