The respected lawyer Dr. Klaus Curtius runs a law firm in Chiemgau. His wife Katherina is successful as a hobby painter and is supported by Herbert Kurz, a friend of the family. The couple lead a very harmonious family life with their 17-year-old daughter Ariane. One evening Katharine Curtius comes home changed and tells her family that she has run over a man she thinks is dead. Incomprehensible to her husband, she has not called the police or the ambulance service. The lawyer drives to the scene of the accident and names his wife as the fugitive driver. During the police interrogation, Katherina Curtius states that the previously unidentified man staggered into her car and was thrown against a hydrant by the braking process. The public prosecutor rightly has doubts about the portrayal, the victim is identified as the unemployed musician Peter Frank.
The lawyer learns from Herbert Kurz that the musician picked up his wife at the gallery that evening and that there was an argument. Blackmail letters to Katherina Curtius can be found in the apartment of the deceased who fathered Ariane during a one-night stand with her mother. An arrest warrant for murder is issued against them, and the horned lawyer resigns from his mandate to defend his wife. But he takes it up again when his daughter becomes desperate about the situation. In a letter and during a visit to the prison, Ariane accuses her mother of hiding the truth about her father from her. But she thinks she would act like this again because she did not want to affect the close relationship between her husband and daughter.
In the main hearing, Katherina Curtius is accused of running into Peter Frank, fatally injuring her and having committed a hit-and-run. The prosecutor speaks of murder and demands life imprisonment. Dr. Curtius speaks of a mental state of emergency and emphasizes his wife's exemplary role as a mother. A witness confirms the musician's criminal intentions. Katharine Curtius received 18 months' imprisonment for being removed from the scene of the accident, false statements and obstruction of state investigations, which the family and Herbert Kurz received with relief.
