Die Apostel Jesu ( Order abbreviation : AJ, en : Congregation of the Apostles of Jesus ) is an African mission society of the Roman Catholic Church .

history

These apostles of Jesus are the first exclusively African missionary community. It was founded as a congregation for priests and lay brothers on August 22, 1968. Its founder was the Comboni missionary Father Giovanni Marengoni MCCJ († July 27, 2007 in Milan ). The community received episcopal approval from Bishop Sisto Mazzoldi MCCJ. From 1967 to 1980 he was the first bishop of the Moroto Diocese in Uganda .

By decree of June 21, 2018, as a result of an apostolic visitation, the community was placed under a "Pontifical Commissioner" and prohibited from accepting new members. The commissioner has extensive canonical powers to investigate allegations of child abuse and the extent to which members of the community do not live by the rule. The so-called " small seminars " are closed; it should be examined whether they can be converted into regular schools accessible to all. Community life is to be restored; this also applies to members in the USA and Europe. The educational system of the Order and its financial situation are also to be examined.

The mission community with its 370 priests and lay brothers is now represented in over 30 dioceses in Africa , including Uganda, Kenya , Tanzania , Sudan , South Africa , Djibouti and Ethiopia . In Europe and the United States , the community has religious offices in more than 20 dioceses in 15 different states . The mission priests work as parish priests , vicars and hospital chaplains and also look after school facilities.

The Generalate is presided over by the Superior General , elected for a six-year term. He is also chairman of the general council . The religious community is divided into five provinces (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan and the United States). Each religious province is headed by a provincial superior and his provincial council. The generalate of the community is located in the "Mazzoldi House" in Nairobi .

Missionary work

Their mission is to spread the gospel , build seminar houses, educational institutions, and schools , build health centers, do farming, and look after children whose parents have died of HIV / AIDS .

General

On June 27, 2007, Emmanuel Obbo AJ, the first member of this episcopal congregation, was ordained a bishop. He was the diocesan bishop of Soroti in Uganda. On January 2, 2014 it appointed Pope Francis to the Archbishop of Tororo .
