Arachova ( Greek Αράχωβα ( f. Sg. )) Is a small Greek town and municipality of the municipality of Distomo-Arachova-Andikyra, founded in 2011 in the region of Central Greece . Arachova is about 160 km northwest of Athens and 12 km before historic Delphi . 2,770 people live in Arachova (2011 census). The name of the city is derived from the Slavic word orah for 'nut'.

geography

The area of the former municipality Arachova forms the westernmost tip of the regional district Boeotia and borders in the northwest, west, southwest and south on the regional district Fokida with the municipality Delfi . In the north and northeast the area borders on the municipalities of Amfiklia and Livadia , in the west and south lie the remaining municipalities of Distomo and Andikyra. Arachova is located inland on the southern slope of Mount Parnassus (Parnassos) at an altitude of 963 m above sea level. The area is dominated by the southern slope of Parnassus in the north and the northern slope of Mount Kirfi (1,560 m altitude). Between the two mountain ranges, the Delphi or Arachova valley stretches from east to west and opens towards Delfi on the Krissa plain. The northwestern part of the area belongs to the Parnassos National Park. The Arachova area does not have direct access to the sea; the nearest coast is that of the Corinthian Gulf at Andikyra.

economy

Because of its proximity to Delphi, Arachova has long been a tourist city. In the last few decades it has also developed into one of the most modern and largest ski resorts in Greece through the construction of ski centers on Mount Parnassos.

The traditions and folk activities are still very much cherished and celebrated by the residents. The highlight is the traditional celebration of the feast day of St. Georgios , the city patron, which usually takes place immediately after the Orthodox Easter and lasts for three days. Traditional dances , sports events in memory of the fight of Arachova against the Turks as well as food and drink for all guests are part of it.

Typical products of the place are olives , formaella (a traditional type of cheese only available in Arachova), tsipouro (pomace brandy).

traffic

The national road 48 ( European route 65 ) leads through Arachova, which connects Thiva and Livadia in the west with Amfissa and further east with Nafpaktos and Messolongi . Both the national road 48 running west of Arachova and the national road 48 running east of Arachova represent pass roads that lead to Arachova or to Distomo (east) or Delfi (west).

Quote about Arachova

"Αν αγναντέψεις και την δεις θα σε μαγέψει ξένε, και άμα ρωτήσεις θα σου πουν Αράχωβα τη λένε, which city they should be enchanted - and you should be amazed - if you should cast your gaze!" , one will answer 'Arachova'! "(Georgios Siros)
