The project Archivum Rhenanum - Digital Archives on the Upper Rhine or Cross-Border Network of Digital Historical Sources: Archives as memories of the historically grown Upper Rhine landscape will build a cross-border, Franco-German portal and an open network of archives . It is supported by historical and regional experts, institutions and associations. Digitization in combination with explanations is intended to give the general public access to cross-border archive material.

The project

In the German and French archives on the Upper Rhine , i.e. the regions of Baden, Palatinate and Alsace , unique manuscripts , some of which date back to the Middle Ages, are kept on history, for example on economic, social and cultural developments in the region. Until now, however, this cultural memory was only accessible to a small, selected group of people - public access was made more difficult by language, level of education, an outdated written form and decentralized storage. The resulting "border" between France and Germany is to be overcome by the planned, bilingual portal with cross-border content and an open network of archives, supported by historical and regional experts, institutions and associations. The aim is to virtually restore historical memory on the Upper Rhine. Modern explanations, consistent bilingualism and the use of new media (digitization, online offers, bilingual communication platforms such as blogs) are intended to give the public access to the collected and historical knowledge on the Upper Rhine. The focus is on the Middle Ages and the early modern period (16th century). This is indispensable because the sources from the Middle Ages and the Reformation clearly show "how few borders existed in people's minds and borders like the Rhine were 'permeable'". But it is precisely these holdings that have not yet been accessible to the public. An extension to later periods, for example up to the great Franco-German conflicts in the 19th and beginning of the 20th century : "It would also be an important perspective to explore the entirety of the border area in all its ups and downs, difficulties and 'displacements' to be mapped and made comprehensively accessible ". The measures of the project partners (2013-2015) include in particular the preparation and digitization of fundamental historical sources for presentation via the portal, the establishment of a cross-border , Franco-German database ("Archivum Rhenanum"), the permanent presentation of this database via the portal, further the mediation and processing of the cultural property as “historical memory” for the general public as well as a conception and permanent coordination of a public discussion and communication platform and finally the implementation of conservation measures.
