Armin Richard Baltzer (born January 16, 1842 in Zwochau ; † November 5, 1913 in Hilterfingen ) was a Swiss geologist of German descent.

Life

Armin Baltzer's father Friedrich (1801–1885) was a pastor in Zwochau and after long years in various places emigrated with his family to Switzerland in 1855 for religious and political reasons and settled in Zurich. Armin Baltzer first attended secondary school and studied science from 1860 to 1863 at the University of Zurich and at the Polytechnic . Influential teachers were the geologist Arnold Escher von der Linth , the mineralogist Gustav Adolf Kenngott and the chemist Johannes Wislicenus . In 1863, Baltzer moved to the University of Bonn , where in 1864 he did a zoological thesis with Franz Hermann Troschel to become a Dr. phil. received his doctorate. He then worked as a research assistant at the Chemical Institute of the University of Zurich.

In 1869 Baltzer was appointed professor of chemistry, mineralogy and geology and from 1879 to 1882 rector of the industrial department of the Cantonal School in Zurich, where he remained until 1884. Albert Heim was one of his most famous students at the time . During this time he also undertook numerous geological excursions with Escher von der Linth. In 1873 he was at the University and Institute of Technology Zurich habilitation and received in 1884 a reputation as a professor of mineralogy and geology at the University of Bern , where he on mineralogical and geological institute held in the years 1888 to 1889, the office of the dean.

In 1880 Armin Baltzer was naturalized in Zurich. His son Fritz Baltzer was a zoologist, developmental biologist and geneticist.

Services

His work deals with the central alpine granite massifs , especially the Aar massif . He recognized the tectonic nature of the contact between limestone and gneiss and worked on the theory of the ceiling of the Alps. He worked on the ice age deposits in the Swiss plateau and on the southern side of the Alps, regionally the deposits of the Aare and Rhone glaciers , the Glärnisch and the Bernese Alps attracted his interest. He also conducted research in the field of volcanology .

He has also published work on the structure of the mineralogical-geological institute at the University of Bern and was the editor of a geological guide for the Bernese Oberland .
