Armin Wankmüller

Armin Wankmüller (born May 15, 1924 in Tübingen ; † April 20, 2016 there ) was a German pharmacist and pharmacy historian .

Life

Armin Wankmüller grew up in Nürtingen and began studying chemistry in 1942 . This was interrupted by the war. After the war he continued his studies and studied pharmacy . He completed this in 1951 with the state examination. In 1954 he received his doctorate in Tübingen with a thesis on paper chromatography and electrophoresis .

From 1952 to 1958 he played a key role in building up the Tübingen university pharmacy. In 1958 he left the university pharmacy to run the “Uhland pharmacy” in Tübingen as an independent pharmacist until 1988.

Between 1960 and 1962 he began to be interested in history . He was a guest student in Modern History and his first publications soon appeared. Above all, the pharmacy history of the Württemberg homeland was in the foreground in his research, as well as the consideration of pharmacist training at the university, the history of individual pharmacies and the whereabouts of emigrated Württemberg pharmacists in America . In total there are 700 publications written by him.

Many of his results can be found in the articles he founded in 1950 on the history of pharmacies in Württemberg . His research also went beyond the borders of Württemberg, for example researching the development of pharmacies in Switzerland . Since 1981 Armin Wankmüller has been teaching at the University of Tübingen , for the history of natural science with a special focus on the history of pharmacy and other courses. In 1989 the University of Tübingen appointed him honorary professor .

For many years he was on the board of the German Society for the History of Pharmacy (DGGP) and the International Society for the History of Pharmacy (IGGP). In 1998 he organized the Biennale in Ulm and in charge of the German Pharmaceutical Central Library in Stuttgart .

Honors

Wankmüller received many awards for his life's work. He received the Schelenz badge (1970), the Sertürner medal (1977), the Urdang medal (1991), the badge of honor of the German pharmacists (1994) and the Johannes Valentin medal in silver (1999). In 2001 he was made an honorary member of the German Society for the History of Pharmacy, together with the award of the Federal Cross of Merit by Friedhelm Repnik .
