Arnold Matteus

Arnold Matteus (born December 1 . Jul / 13. December  1897 greg. Farm Leiso in the rural community Kärgula ; † 2. November 1986 in Tartu ) was an Estonian architect .

Life and architecture

Arnold Alvil Matteus was born as the second child of smallholder August Matteus and his wife Miina-Auguste Matteus (née Kärssin). He had an older brother and a younger sister.

Matteus first attended the community school in Kärgula and the parish school in Urvaste , before he graduated from the secondary school in Tartu from 1914 to 1918. In 1918 he enrolled in the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Tartu . In 1919/20 he took part in the Estonian War of Independence against Soviet Russia .

In 1921 Matteus first moved to Darmstadt to study . From 1921 to 1925 Matteus then studied architecture at the Technical University in Karlsruhe, Baden .

From 1926 to 1935 and from 1941 to 1944 Matteus was a city architect in Tartu in southern Estonia. From 1944 to 1960 he was the city's chief architect at the same location.

From 1931 to 1935 Matteus was chairman of the Tartu artists' association Pallas . From 1942 to 1944 he was director of the Pallas Higher Art School. From 1945 to 1953 Matteus taught at the State Art Institute in Tartu.

Awards

In 1984 Matteus was awarded the Honorable Architect of the Estonian SSR .

Private life

In 1932 Matteus married Elsbet Põderson. The couple divorced three years later. In 1935 Matteus married Juta Otsason (1914–1943). In 1936 the daughter Hella-Mare Matteus was born.
