Arnold Moss
Arnold Moss (born January 28, 1910 in Brooklyn , New York City , † December 15, 1989 in New York City) was an American theater and film actor.
Life
Arnold Moss first studied Latin and Greek at the City College of New York . After receiving his Masters in Old French from Columbia University , he taught acting at Brooklyn College from 1933 to 1940 . In addition, he tried his hand at acting on stage. He initially joined Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theater for two years . In 1929 he had already made his debut on Broadway , where he appeared repeatedly until the early 1970s, including in Shakespeare plays such as The Tempest , What You Want , King Lear andMeasure for measure . Hereceived good reviewsfor his portrayal of Prospero in The Tempest and Malvolio in What you want . With his deep voice and flawless pronunciation, he also worked regularly on the radio from the 1930s onwards. He played in numerous radio plays and was a speaker for CBS Radio in New York.
In 1946 he made his screen debut, whereupon he was seen mostly in supporting roles as a villain or as a foreign bandit in Hollywood productions due to his dark appearance. From the 1950s onwards he took part in numerous American television series, such as See Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1958), Spaceship Enterprise ( Star Trek , 1966), Whenever He Took Pills ( Mr. Terrific , 1967), Bonanza (1968), and Fantasy Island (1978). However, he continued to devote himself primarily to the theater and toured the United States with the theater company he founded, the Shakespeare Festival Players . In the early 1960s he received a PhD from New York University . He also wrote articles about the theater for the New York Times .
From 1933 he was married to Stella Reynolds, with whom he had two children, Andrea and Jeff Moss (1942-1998). Jeff was later also active in the film business as a composer. Arnold Moss died of lung cancer in his hometown of New York in 1989 at the age of 79 .
