Arthur Jocelyn Charles Gore, 6th Earl of Arran KP , PC (I), KGStJ , DL , JP ( September 14, 1868 - December 19, 1958 ) was a British officer and nobleman who was a member of the House between 1901 and 1958 of Lords and was Lord Lieutenant of County Donegal from 1917 and 1920 .

Life

Family origin

Gore was the third of four children and the only son of diplomat Arthur Saunders William Charles Fox Gore , who inherited the title of 5th Earl of Arran from his father in 1884 , and his first wife Edith Elizabeth Henrietta Jocelyn, daughter of Robert Jocelyn, Viscount Jocelyn, and granddaughter of Robert Jocelyn, 3rd Earl of Roden .

His eldest sister, Mabell Frances Elizabeth Gore, was the wife of David Stanley William Ogilvy, 6th Earl of Airlie , who served as a lieutenant colonel in the Line Cavalry Regiment 12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's) . His second oldest sister, Cicely Alice Gore, was married to the politician James Edward Hubert Gascoyne-Cecil, 4th Marquess of Salisbury , who served as Lord President of the Council , Lord Seal Keeper , Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister of Commerce ( President of the Board of Trade ) acted. His youngest sister, Esther Georgiana Caroline Gore, was with William Frederick Danvers Smith , who between 1891 and 1910 represented the Strand constituency as a member of the House of Commons and from 1913 until his death in 1928 was the 2nd Viscount Hambleden member of the House of Lords. From his father's second marriage to Winifred Ellen Reilly, his half-sister Winifred Helena Lettice Gore came from, who died unmarried on December 6, 1958.

Military career and Earl of Arran

Arthur Gore himself graduated after school, a career as an officer in the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment) and was a lieutenant ( Second Lieutenant ) there on 17 November in 1888 Lieutenant ( Lieutenant transported). After the death of his father on March 14, 1901 Arthur Gore inherited the titles created in the Peerage of Ireland as 6th Earl of Arran , of the Arran Islands in the County of Galway, as 6th Viscount Sudley , of Castle Gore in the County of Mayo, as 6th Baron Saunders , of Deeps in the County of Wexford, and 8th Baronet , of Newtown Gore in the County of Mayo. With the title of 2nd Baron Sudley , of Castle Gore in the County of Mayo, which he inherited and created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , he also became a member of the House of Lords, which he held until his death on December 19, 1958 belonged for more than 57 years.

On February 8, 1915, he was transferred to the general reserve officer list as a captain and brevet major , this decision later being dated back to October 30, 1914. After being wounded, Gore finally resigned from military service on February 14, 1918 and was added to the retirement list.

Gore had previously succeeded John Olphert as Lord Lieutenant of County Donegal in 1917 and held this position as representative of the British King in this county until he was replaced by Emerson Herdman in 1920. In 1917 he also became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. On June 14, 1921, he became Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Essex County and held this post until his resignation on April 20, 1946.

Marriages and offspring

Arthur Gore was married twice. In his first marriage on August 16, 1902, he married Mathilde Jacqueline Marie Beauclerk Huyssen van Kattendijke, who died on March 6, 1927, a daughter of the Dutch aristocrat Frederik Johann Emanuel Baron Huyssen van Kattendijke, whose father Willem Johan Cornelis Huyssen van Kattendijke was Minister of the Navy and temporarily acting Foreign Minister of the Netherlands was.

From this marriage two sons were born. The older son Arthur Paul John James Charles Gore inherited the title of 7th Earl of Arran and the subordinate titles after the death of his father on December 19, 1958 . However, since he died nine days later on December 28, 1958 unmarried and without male descendants, his younger brother Arthur Strange Kattendyke David Archibald Gore inherited the title of 8th Earl of Arran and the associated titles.
