Arthur Johannes Scholz

Arthur Johannes Scholz (born November 16, 1883 in Lemberg , † April 3, 1945 in Vienna ) was an Austrian conductor and composer .

Life

After attending grammar school in Breslau , Scholz studied violin , oboe , flute and clarinet at the orchestra school in Goldberg, Silesia . He also received private lessons from Stefan Stocker in Vienna in theory , singing and organ . At first he worked as an organist in Vienna and then became the municipal conductor and director of the orchestra school in Spalato ( Dalmatia ). From 1909 he worked as music director in Olomouc and theater conductor at the local theater. He conducted the La cappella choir in Vienna from 1922 and from 1928 the Vienna Singers Association. He was the founder and conductor of the Vienna Choir School. From 1932 he taught at the Vienna Music Academy , most recently as a full professor.

Scholz composed, among other things, the musical melodrama Adam and Eva , wrote chamber music for oboe and piano, the music for Franz Grillparzer's Libussa (1920; world premiere at the Burgtheater Vienna ) and Franz Werfels Juarez and Maximilian (1929, ibid), songs and choral works. In 1931 his comic opera Don Diego was premiered.

He was married to Lotte, b. Scholz. The marriage produced a son.

Arthur Johannes Scholz was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 12 C, Row 16, No. 3).
