Arthur Rowe (athlete)

Arthur Rowe (born August 17, 1936 in Barnsley , † September 13, 2003 ibid) was an English athlete . With a height of 1.87 m, he had a competition weight of 100 kg.

The trained blacksmith won the first of five AAA championship titles in the shot put in 1957 . In 1958 he hit his first British record with 16.98. In total, he set 15 British and six European records by 1961. His record of 19.56 meters was only exceeded as a European record in 1966 by the Hungarian Vilmos Varjú .

At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in July 1958 Rowe won with 17.57 meters and over one meter ahead of the runner-up, his compatriot Martyn Lucking . A month later at the European Championships in Stockholm, four shot putters hit 17 meters. Arthur Rowe won with 17.78 meters ahead of Wiktor Lipsnis from the Soviet Union with 17.47 meters and Jíři Skobla (Czechoslovakia) with 17.12 meters. Fourth was the German Hermann Lingnau ahead of the Italian Silvano Meconi , who was to replace Skobla as a European record holder in 1959 and was then replaced by Rowe.

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Rowe only hit 16.68 meters in qualifying and missed the final by seven centimeters.

At the age of 25, Rowe retired from his amateur athletics career to try his hand at Oldham as a professional rugby league . Here, however, he had little success. In the following years Rowe was seen as a professional at the events of the Scottish Highland Games . In 1970 he became world champion in tree trunk throwing there .
