Arthur Côrtes Verocai (born June 17, 1945 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian musician, singer, conductor and record producer . He plays acoustic guitar and piano .

Life

Verocai is a self-taught musician and appeared as a composer at festivals from 1966 onwards. As a producer and arranger , he has worked with numerous well-known Brazilian musicians - for example with Ivan Lins , Elizeth Cardoso , Erasmo Carlos , Célia , Ana Carolina , Marcelo Jeneci , Jorge Ben Jor , Gal Costa and Marcos Valle .

In 1972 he recorded his first own album , which is self-titled, in the Somil studio in his hometown, together with the singer Célia and the percussionist Pedro Santos . In it he combined jazz , bossa nova , folk , psychedelic folk and experimental music and marked in this way "the transition from the Tropicália of the 1960s to the fusion approaches of the 1970s". Although the album was highly praised by the critics, it was not well received by the public, which is why it was forgotten for several decades.

In the meantime, Verocai worked as music director and arranger for various programs on the large Rede Globo television network and was also responsible for the music for several commercials. Most recently, American artists have rediscovered his music. The hip-hop band Little Brother , for example, used an excerpt from his song Caboclo as an audio sample for their own single We got now , which appeared on the album The Minstrel Show in 2005 . Also, MF Doom and Ludacris used material from Verocai. His debut album has been reissued in several versions since 2003; since then two other own publications have appeared.
