Ascensión is a town in the Santa Cruz Department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Ascensión is the most populous place in the canton of San Petas in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of San Matías in the province of Ángel Sandoval . The village is located at an altitude of 249  m, three kilometers south of the Bolivian border with Brazil .

Ascensión is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian lowlands in the wetland of the South American Pantanal and has a tropical climate with a balanced temperature profile.

The mean average temperature of the region is 27 ° C (see climate diagram San Matías), the monthly mean temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 24 ° C in June / July and 29 ° C in November / December. Annual precipitation is around 1250 mm, with the months June to September being arid with monthly precipitation of less than 50 mm , while the months December to February each have values ​​of around 200 mm.

Ascensión is 586 kilometers by road northeast of Santa Cruz , the capital of the department.

From Santa Cruz, the asphalted highway Ruta 4 leads 57 kilometers northwards via Warnes to Montero . A few kilometers north of Montero, it meets Ruta 10 , which leads over a distance of 648 kilometers to the east and crosses the towns of San Ramón , San Javier and Santa Rosa de Roca as an asphalt road. The road is unpaved for the remaining 370 kilometers via San Ignacio de Velasco and San Vicente de la Frontera to the border town of San Matías . Las Petas is 70 kilometers after San Vicente and 121 kilometers before San Matías.
