The AshantiGold Sporting Club Ltd. , AshantiGold SC for short , is a football club from the Ghanaian city of Obuasi . It was founded in 1978 as Obuasi Goldfields Sporting Club Ltd. founded and renamed in April 2004 after being bought by Anglogold Ashanti . The team won the Ghanaian championship in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 2015 and reached the final of the CAF Champions League in 1997 .

history

The association was founded in 1978 by employees of the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation under the name "Obuasi Goldfields". Since the company refused to act as the main sponsor, the players' salaries had to be paid by the workers themselves in the early days. Nevertheless, they made it into the final of the Ghanaian Cup in 1984. As a result, one of the company's main shareholders, Lonmin plc, became aware of the club and hired a British coach. The team was transferred to the first division , but due to a lack of management, the club sank increasingly into chaos. Only after winning the Cup in 1993 was it possible to integrate the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation into the club. As a result, a British trainer was hired again.

The following season they won third place in the table behind the dominant teams of Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak SC . A management team of thirteen was installed and Ashanti Gold won the championship. As the title could be defended in the following two years, Ashanti Gold was after League Primus Asante Kotoko and even before Hearts of Oak the second club in Ghana, which managed to become champions three times in a row. To date, only these three clubs have managed this feat. In 1997 they made it to the finals in the CAF Champions League , but they lost against the Moroccan representative Raja Casablanca on penalties .

After that you could not build on these successes, but with 6 runners-up from the last 8 seasons you play a very good role in the league again.

In 2004 the club was renamed and has been called "Ashanti Gold Sporting Club" since then.
