The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank ( Chinese  亞洲 基礎 設施 投資 銀行  /  亚洲 基础 设施 投资 银行 , short 亞 投 行  /  亚 投 行 , English Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, AIIB ) is a multilateral development bank under Chinese leadership, which was founded in 2015 by fifty-seven countries and is in competition to the World Bank , the International Monetary Fund and the Asian Development Bank . The European states Great Britain, Germany and Italy have since joined it.

backgrounds

The reason for the initiative to be founded was China's dissatisfaction with the dominance of the US in the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank , which did not reflect a fair distribution of global power relations from China's point of view. Since the Americans strictly refused to implement a change in the voting structure, China started the initiative in 2013. In addition to the 21 founding members, Germany , Italy , France and the United Kingdom , among others , also expressed their interest in supporting the new development bank as non-regional members.

The founding document of the AIIB was signed on June 29, 2015 by representatives from 57 countries in Beijing . The bank started operations in January 2016 without the participation of the US and Japan. Japan and Canada did not rule out joining at a later date.

Joachim von Amsberg is the "Vice President for Politics and Strategy".
