prehistory

After the rift between communist leaders Stalin ( Soviet Union ) and Josip Broz Tito ( Yugoslavia ), triggered by different views on the economic and political development in the emerging Eastern Bloc and the resulting exclusion of Yugoslavia from the Cominform alliance in June 1948, tensions increased between Yugoslavia and Romania, who professed Stalin. The multiethnic population of the western Banat in the area of the Romanian-Yugoslav border has been classified as a security risk by the communist government of Romania. For this reason, the Romanian government drafted a plan to cleanse the border area "from politically unreliable elements".

On June 18, 1951, Orthodox Pentecost Sunday , 12,791 families, which corresponds to 40,320 people, were abducted regardless of their nationality. Kulaks ( Romanian "Chiaburi" ), merchants , landowners and industrialists were deported for economic reasons, former members of the armed forces , anti-communists , refugees from Bessarabia and Titoists , as well as intellectuals, mainly teachers and clergy , but also criminals , were deported for political reasons . Romanians were just as affected as Germans , Serbs , Bulgarians , Hungarians , Jews and Aromanians . Residents of the western Banat were deported from an area 25–30 kilometers wide along the Romanian-Yugoslav border from the Timiș , Caraș-Severin and Mehedinți districts . The deportation ended in 1956. In 20106 armed soldiers and members of the militia were used to carry out the deportation .
