The association, based in Brussels , was founded in 1985 by students in Paris and is now a network that extends across Europe and consists of around 13,000 members in around 200 local groups (“antennas”) in university cities in 40 European countries. The head office has advisory status with the Council of Europe and the UN, as well as action status with UNESCO .

The association stands for a united Europe as well as for cross-border cooperation, communication and integration. In this respect, it deliberately renounces national structures and is not tied to any academic faculty , denomination or political party .

history

The association was founded in 1985 as EGEE ("États Généraux des Étudiants de l'Europe") at the EGEE conference, attended by students from Paris , Leiden , London , Madrid , Milan and Munich . The conference was organized by Franck Biancheri , among others . In 1987 EGEE was able to win over the then French President François Mitterrand to support the ERASMUS program. This later became a successful European exchange program.

In 1988 the organization changed its name to AEGEE . The “Summer University” project took place for the first time. The association moved to Brussels in 1995 . With AEGEE-Ankara, the first antenna was founded in the same year, which is geographically located in Asia . AEGEE visits the Republic of Cyprus for the first time in 1998 . AEGEE-Magusa (Famagusta) was founded in 2001.

In 2001 and 2002 the organization organized several projects addressing peace and stability in south-eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. In 2003 AEGEE visited the Caucasus for the first time as part of a case study trip . In the same year AEGEE-Europe organized a conference in the buffer zone in Nicosia (Cyprus).

Groups also exist in Georgia , Armenia and Azerbaijan .

structure

European and local level

It takes place twice a year, usually in April ("Spring Agora") and in October ("Fall Agora"), at constantly changing locations in Europe. The agora is the only decision-making body of the association. In addition to political discussions, the statutes are changed and elections are held here. The board of AEGEE-Europe, the Comité Directeur, has to answer to the Agora for its decisions as well as for the budget of AEGEE-Europe. In addition, the participants are offered workshops on various topics.

activities

The association has four fields of activity:

Active civil society

The association is an independent, non-partisan organization that works closely with governments , institutions and other NGOs . AEGEE sees itself as a political voice for its members at every level. Events on various topics are organized within the network, the results of which are then used, among other things, for lobbying at European organizations.

Academic education

The association consists of students who are committed to a European dimension in academic education. AEGEE not only supports student mobility , but also language learning and international cooperation on an academic level. In addition, the association urges the further development of European educational programs, such as ERASMUS.

Peace and stability

The association promotes and encourages the spread of democratic ideals, tolerance , open-mindedness and mutual understanding between young people in conflict areas and thus makes a contribution to conflict resolution in the Balkans , the Caucasus , Cyprus and between Greeks and Turks. For example, the association regularly organizes conferences and other events on this topic.

Cultural exchange

The promotion of respect and appreciation between students from different European cultures is the core of the association. It sees this topic as a central point of European integration , in the belief that integration can never be decreed from top to bottom, but must arise from an inner-European understanding of peoples. A large number of exchange projects are carried out within the network every year.
