The Mühlbach or Ziegelbach rises on the western edge of the rock mountain in the Hessian Odenwald between Balkhausen and Bensheim-Hochstädten .
Mühlbach
The Mühlbach is reinforced in its course by ten further tributaries and flows through the middle of the Bensheim district of Hochstädten, past the former Marmoritwerk and the Goethe fountain through the Mühltal towards Bensheim-Auerbach . In the Mühltal there used to be seven mills, after which the water in its upper reaches up to the old Bergstrasse (today Darmstädter Strasse / B 3) is named. The village mill in the town center is now a wine bar, the Ranzenbergermühle is today the location of the Wiesengrund retirement and nursing home, the Gagelsmühle studio and home of an artist based in Auerbach, the Kadels, Wiemers, Mößingers and Jungmühle are used as residential buildings.
The Mühltal borders to the north of the Auerberg with the Auerbach Castle - an old castle ruin - and to the south of the state park Fürstenlager .
Auerbach
In the Bensheim-Auerbach district, the Mühlbach is divided into an underground, twisted and an above-ground, open stream. The recurring floods and flooding of Bachgasse in the 1980s led to structural measures leading to the largest part of the water being diverted. According to the model of the Freiburg Bächle , a constant part of the water flows openly through Bachgasse, right through the old village center of Auerbach, past numerous half-timbered houses towards Bundesstraße 3 (Darmstädter Straße).
Ziegelbach
After the merging of the two streams, the Mühlbach crosses underground under the federal highway 3 and flows openly towards the Auerbach train station. Since there was a brick factory, also a porcelain factory, here around 1850, the Mühlbach is called Ziegelbach from Darmstädter Straße.
After crossing under the Darmstadt – Heidelberg railway line, after about 1 km the flowing water flows into the Winkelbach coming from Bensheim, previously known as Lauter , which flows into the Rhine near Gernsheim .
The total length of Mühlbach and Ziegelbach from the source to the mouth is 6.7 km.
