Auerodendron is a genus of the family of the cross thorn plants (Rhamnaceae). The representatives of the genus are native to the Caribbean and southern Florida . The generic name honors Carl Freiherr Auer von Welsbach (1858–1929), an Austrian chemist and entrepreneur who discovered the chemical elements neodymium , praseodymium , ytterbium and lutetium .

All species of the genus are unreinforced shrubs that usually reach 2 to 10 meters in height. The leaves are stalked and simple and are opposite . The small five-fold flowers are solitary or in paniculate inflorescences . They usually form red or black drupes ; this indicates bird spread .

distribution

Most species in the genus auerodendron are endemic to Cuba , but others are found in the Bahamas , Jamaica , Puerto Rico, and southern Florida .

Systematics

The genus Auerodendron was established in 1924 by Ignaz Urban in Symbolae Antillanae seu Fundamenta Florae Indiae Occidentalis , 9, p. 221. Type species is Auerodendron cubense (Britton & N.Wilson) Urb.

The genus Auerodendron belongs to the tribe Rhamneae in the family Rhamnaceae and is closely related to the genera Rhamnidium , Karwinskia and Reynosia . The genus Auerodendron includes about ten species:
