Resurrection Church
Bad Salzuflen (2017)

The Church of the Resurrection in Bad Salzuflen , on Gröchteweg at the corner of Volkhausenstrasse, is the youngest Protestant church in the town and, next to the Church of the Redeemer, the second church in the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Bad Salzuflen. The church is used as a place of worship by the evangelical reformed community.

The parish takes part in the Open Church of the Lippe Regional Church . The church is also open on weekdays outside of the service times.

Building history

Cornerstone

The large number of visitors to church services in the summer made it necessary to build a second Lutheran church in the city. A building plot on Gröchteweg in the western part of the city was acquired and after the construction of a rectory, construction of the church began in 1964. The foundation stone was laid on July 13, 1964. The foundation stone bears the inscription “I live and you should also live” ( Jn 14.19  EU ). The walled-in certificate ends with the sentence: “If the risen Lord wants to prove himself to be the living one in our community and in this church again and again.” The church was built according to plans by the architect Heinrich Loos (Bad Salzuflen). The artist couple Hans-Helmuth von Rath (1923 - December 29, 2001), his wife Margarete von Rath and the parish priest Eberhard Schendel (1925–2016) played a key role in the artistic design.

"The harmony between craftsmanship and artistic design is impressive, which is rarely found in this perfect form."

- Franz Meyer in Epochs of City History , p. 431.

"The devotional design was not just added, it grew along with the building."

- Eberhard Schendel in The Church of the Resurrection of the Evangelical Lutheran. Parish in the Staatsbad Salzuflen , p. 4.

On May 1, 1966, Sunday Jubilate , the Church of the Resurrection was inaugurated in a festive service by State Superintendent Smidt and Superintendent Klose.

architecture

Bell tower with a recessed cross

The basic shape of the church is a parable . This symbolizes the thoughts of the resurrection of Jesus Christ : Down into death and up again into life. The church room offers space for 310 believers and 110 on the gallery, it can be expanded by 80 places by opening partition walls around the community room in the extension. In 1995 the buildings were expanded to include a modern community center and a youth cellar on the free site by the tower (architect Maria Winkler and Büro Loos). Art exhibitions are regularly presented in this community center.

A photovoltaic system is installed on the eastern side of the roof of the church, invisible from the street .

The 29 meter high tower is crowned by a vertical concrete slab. The plate with the recessed cross is illuminated from the church side at night. This results in two different views: a dark cross on a light background and a light cross on a dark background.

Furnishing

Sanctuary

Chancel in the morning light

Pulpit , altar and baptismal font are made of light Obernkirchen sandstone . The parabolic shape reappears at the altar, which together with the black marble slab indicates the empty grave. The pulpit with the Christ monogram has moved a little towards the assembled community.

The font has a copper lid with a fish-shaped handle . A stone from the place on the Jordan where Jesus is said to have been baptized is set in. The Christian baptismal formula "In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" is carved around the baptismal font.

On the wall behind the altar hangs an altar cross as the central point of the room today. It is adorned with rock crystals and glass elements. A panel takes the Lectionary and on the paschal candle is from Easter to Ascension Day , the Easter candle ignited.

Room-high glass windows rise on both sides of the chancel . On the left of the pulpit side, the Resurrection window with strong, darker colored areas penetrate into the lighter areas from above. On the right side of the baptismal font is the Ascension Window with blue colors that merge into yellow and white tones upwards. A circular shape with the triangle as a symbol of the Trinity and the eye of God points to a dimension other than the earthly.

Stations of the Cross window

Large colored glass windows along the west wall form a way of the cross . They refer to the suffering of Christ and people. The first window reminds of the entry into Jerusalem with bright colors . In the second picture, shades of red represent the spilled blood. The dark colors of the third picture represent the garden of Gethsemane . In the fourth field, a small yellow triangle (Christ as the light of the world) shines between dark colors of distress. The last window at the height of the pulpit shows a sloping, light-colored cross. The artists called it the erection of the cross . The picture at the height of the pulpit takes up the colors of the Resurrection window on the left in the chancel.

crib

A sculpture by Hans Dinnendahl (1901–1966) is located under a staircase to the organ gallery, diagonally to the font. The child in the manger extends his hands over the assembled congregation in a blessing. In the church window above, the star of Bethlehem appears as a stained glass.

Grapevine relief

The relief Christ the Vine by Hanns-Helmut von Rath hangs at the church exit. The cross-shaped vine bears a cluster of 12 berries ( 12 tribes of Israel , 12 apostles ). Three root strands ( trinity ) encompass seven chambers with stones from places of God's work ( Sinai , Lot's Sea , Mount of Beatitudes , Gethsemane , Rome, Auschwitz). Rome and Auschwitz represent the Christian and Jewish martyrs here . The stones were collected and made available by church members.

Church foyer

In the church foyer, designed as a prayer room, hangs the sculpture Christ the World Judge by Josef Rikus . The enthroned Christ with a crown of thorns spreads his hands with the wounds. The sculpture originally hung in the chancel, but was later replaced there by a cross.

In the left window front there are three small glass pictures with biblical themes Burning Bush ( Exodus 3.2  EU ) Resurrection ( Mt 28.6  EU ) and in the third picture the overview of the treasure in the field ( Mt 13.44-46  EU ), the sending of the disciples ( Mt 28,18-20  EU ) and the Pentecost miracle ( Acts 2,1-4  EU ).

More works of art

The Passion Cross by Ernst-Paul Hinckeldey (1893–1952) is now in the community room. It shows the crucified Christ in expressionist language. There is also a first edition of the Elector's Bible, Nuremberg 1640/1641.

In several places there are pictures by H.-H. von Rath, including the large acrylic painting crede et manducasti from 1966 in the vestibule and an oil painting Wake up with an angel making music on the gallery by the staircase.
