August Friedrich Gfrörer

August Friedrich Gfrörer (born March 5, 1803 in Calw ; † July 6, 1861 in Karlsbad ) was a theologian, librarian, historian and member of the Frankfurt National Assembly .

Life

Gfrörer studied Protestant theology at the Tübingen monastery and in 1829 became city vicar in Stuttgart . In 1830 he became a librarian at the royal public library in Stuttgart, where he was able to devote himself primarily to the study of literature and history. In 1846 he was appointed full professor of history at the University of Freiburg . In 1845 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , in 1857 a foreign member. At the University of Freiburg he regularly gave lectures on the history of literature in the Middle Ages.

From May 20, 1848 to May 30, 1849 Gfrörer was a member of the National Assembly as a member of Ehingen . He belonged to the Greater German Party , was a vehement opponent of Prussia and applied in vain for the reunification of the two major denominations in Germany.

In 1853 Gfrörer converted to Catholicism. He mostly wrote his religious and political works under the pseudonym Ernst Freymund.

August Friedrich Gfrörer was the son of the strictly Protestant merchant Johann Jakob Gfrörer. He was married and had children. His wife and the children converted to Catholicism before him.
