August Levin

August Levin (born May 25, 1895 in Loitz ; † November 16, 1967 ) was a German politician ( KPD ), Spain fighter and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

August Levin took part in the First World War and in 1918 was a member of the People's Navy Division . After he was initially a member of the USPD , he joined the KPD in Recklinghausen in 1920 . In Loitz in 1921 he was one of the founders of a local branch of the party, which he headed from 1922 to 1933. During this time he belonged to the Loitz city parliament, the district council and the provincial parliament of the province of Pomerania . In 1929 he attended the KPD central school in Fichtenau. From October 1930 to April 1931 there was a delegation to Moscow for political training .

A few days after the seizure of power , he was arrested for a short time as the “author” of a demonstration directed against the National Socialists. At the end of August 1933 he was arrested again and imprisoned at the police headquarters in Stettin . There he came into contact with Hermann Matern . In October 1933 he was transferred to the Neusustrum concentration camp in Emsland , from where he managed to escape across the Dutch border in November. In the Netherlands he worked as a shop steward for German emigrants.

In 1936 he went to Spain to fight in the International Brigades . He was first used as an officer in the management department. In February he joined the Chapayev battalion in Brigade XIII as a first lieutenant . In 1938 he had to leave Spain because of malaria and went back to the Netherlands, where he married and spent the time of the Second World War . After the end of the war, he returned to Loitz and became mayor of the city. He later lived in Berlin.

August Levin was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In the GDR , a school in Bandelin , a street in his native Loitz and the children's and youth home in Rustow bore his name, where he was also an honorary citizen.
