August Possecker

August Possecker (born April 19, 1860 in Marbach , † November 19, 1936 in Erfurt ) was a German fossil collector .

August Possecker was employed by the city administration of Erfurt. Possecker was married and had 2 sons, both of whom died in the First World War. He then became very religious and was active until the end as a church elder in the church representatives of the Augustinians and the Luther Church in Erfurt.

Possecker collected fossils from the Thuringian Triassic and is best known for his extensive collection of ceratites from the Upper Muschelkalk of Thuringia.

He donated exhibits from his collection to the museums in Stuttgart, Jena, Halle, Braunschweig, Aschersleben and Berlin. He corresponded with Victor Julius Franz and Ernst Stolley about Ceratiten. Alwin Langenhan , Albert Reichardt , Siegfried Rein , Hans Werner Rothe , Martin Schmidt and Anton Schrammen depicted fossils from his collection in their works.

Part of his collection is now in the Erfurt Natural History Museum . Further exhibits (including Ceratites luzifer Rothe 1955) are now in the Otmar Kleindienst (1938–2015) collection in Kleinochsenfurt after parts of the Hans Werner Rothe collection have been acquired .

Honors

Hans Werner Rothe named the Ceratiten Ceratites posseckeri Rothe in his honor in 1937.
