Augustin François César Prouvençal de Saint-Hilaire (born October 4, 1779 in Orléans , † September 30, 1853 in Sennely ), also known as Augustin Saint-Hilaire or Auguste Saint-Hilaire , was a French botanist and explorer. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ A.St.-Hil. "

Live and act

From 1816 to 1822 he made a trip to South America , where he explored the Brazilian hinterland from northeastern Brazil to the Río de la Plata . He collected 24,000 plants from 6,000 different species, but also many animal species, including 2,000 birds, 16,000 insects and 135 mammals. Most of these species were first described. He used the years after the trip to study, describe and classify the material he brought with him and to publish his results. In 1830 he traveled again to South America.

His best-known works are the three-volume Flora Brasiliae meridionalis (1824–1833) and the two-volume Plantes usuélles des Brésiliens (1824–1828). He was also a member of the editorial team of the botanical journal Flore des serres et des jardins de l'Europe published by Louis van Houtte .

From 1819 he was a member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris. In 1823 he was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Since 1834 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and since 1835 of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . His academic nickname was Jacquinus . In 1842 he was elected a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
