The Gräbersberg observation tower is located on the 513 meter high Gräbersberg near Alpenrod in Rhineland-Palatinate .
history
In 1998, the mobile network operator E-Plus built a 73 meter high cellular tower made of reinforced concrete over a period of 6 weeks . At a height of 33 m, it has a viewing platform with a diameter of 8.5 m. The tower has a total weight of 320 t and is not the first observation tower on the Gräbersberg. As early as 1932 a wooden observation tower was built on the mountain, which served as an aerial observation post during the Second World War and which was destroyed by a storm in November 1945.
view
From the viewing platform, on the parapet of which there are orientation boards all around, the view extends to the Eifel and Taunus in good weather . Some mountain peaks of the Siebengebirge , the Sauerland and the Rothaargebirge can also be recognized. The viewing platform, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., can only be reached via a 197-step staircase and not an elevator.
Transmission technology
Due to the high visibility, radio relay systems were installed on the tower , which enable mobile phone calls to be switched between the Cologne / Bonn and Rhine-Main conurbations and the Sauerland. After a few inquiries, the company E-plus permanently approved short-term installation of CB and amateur radio antennas on the platform, for example on field days . However, this is only possible after prior agreement with the owner of the immediately neighboring Alpenroder Hut, who guards, unlocks and locks the tower.
Others
The historical tower has been reconstructed as a climbing model on a reduced scale for children.
