Axel Gustaf Hertzberg (born August 27, 1832 in the province of Jämtland , Sweden ; † September 2, 1878 in Düsseldorf ) was a Swedish portrait , history and genre painter , lithographer and draftsman .

Hertzberg studied at the Stockholm Art Academy between 1849 and 1860 . He then went to Finland for two years . From 1863 he lived in Paris for a time . In 1867 he became Agré of the Stockholm Art Academy. In the same year he settled in Düsseldorf , where he last lived in the Pempelfort district (Duisburger Straße 144).

At first, Hertzberg appeared primarily through portrait drawings and lithographs. From the 1850s he turned to oil painting. At exhibitions in Stockholm in 1857 and 1858, he was awarded medals for history paintings depicting biblical motifs. He later switched to genre painting in the style of the Düsseldorf School . In it he portrayed peasants from the Rhineland and figures in traditional costumes from the 17th century. Hertzberg created a self-portrait that is preserved in the Swedish National Museum in 1877. He made a living from painting and even cared about one Employment as a drawing teacher tried hard. In 1873, the National Museum acquired his genre painting "Confirmands", which he had completed the year before, and which he also offered there, which he had worked on for a long time and for the completion of which he had to sell parts of his property, but it was not acquired. He died four months later in the Marien Hospital in Düsseldorf .
