Bálint Korpási (born March 30, 1987 ) is a Hungarian wrestler . He became world champion in 2016 and European champion in Greco-Roman style in 2017 , each in the weight class up to 71 kg body weight.

Career

Bálint Korpási began wrestling as a teenager in Budapest in 1997 . He focuses on the Greco-Roman style and belongs to the Budapest Vasutas SC (BVSC) club . He was or is mainly trained by Ferenc Bacsa, Ferenc Takacs and György Struhacs. He is also very well known in German wrestling circles, since he has been wrestling in the German Bundesliga for ASV Mainz 88 since 2013 .

As a junior wrestler, he won international championships with 2nd place at the European Junior Championships (Cadets) in Albena / Bulgaria in the weight class up to 50 kg, with 2nd place at the European Junior Championships in Szombathely in the weight class up to 60 kg and with the 3rd place at the Junior European Championship 2007 in Belgrade in the weight class up to 66 kg first medals.

In 2008, Bálint Korpási was also the first Hungarian senior champion in the weight class up to 66 kg. He also won this title in 2010 and 2011 in the weight class up to 66 kg and in 2014, 2016 and 2017 in the weight class up to 71 kg. In 2008 he tried to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing in the weight class up to 60 kg in Novi Sad. However, he failed with a 23rd place. The heavy training had taken too much substance from him. In the next few years he therefore started in the weight class up to 66 kg. He had the problem, however, that he had an absolute world class wrestler in this weight class in Hungary with Tamás Lőrincz as a competitor for the starting places at international championships, which usually overtook him.

For this reason, Balint Korpasi could not achieve any further successes at international championships from 2009 to 2014. Only in 2010 did he come to second place at the Universities World Cup in Turin in the weight class up to 66 kg behind Rasul Tschunajew from Azerbaijan. In 2013 he even started in the weight class up to 74 kg at the World and European Championships, because the weight class up to 66 kg was occupied by Tamás Lőrincz. He could not achieve any success in this weight class.

When the World Wrestling Federation FILA (now UWW) carried out a weight class reform in 2014 and introduced a new weight class up to 71 kg, Bálint Korpási had found the weight class that was directly tailored to his physique and he achieved great success. At the 1st European Games in Baku in 2015 , he was runner-up in this weight class. He defeated u. a. Frank Stäbler from Germany and only lost to Rasul Tschunajew in the final battle. However, he suffered a setback at the World Cup this year in Las Vegas , because he lost there in his first fight against Justin Henry Lester from the United States and therefore only finished 30th.

In March 2016 he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Riga and in December 2016 he was in Budapest in the weight class up to 71 kg after victories over Kairatbek Tugolbajew, Kyrgyzstan, Alexander Maksimovic, Serbia, Dawid Karecinski, Poland, Ilie Cojocaru , Romania and Daniel Cataraga , Moldova, world champion. He was not at the start at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro because the weight class up to 71 kg is not Olympic.

In 2017 Balint Korpasi also became European champion in Novi Sad . In the final he defeated Pavel Ljach from Belarus. At the 2017 World Cup in Paris , however, he was unable to defend his title after losing in the semi-finals to Demeu Schadrajew from Kazakhstan. But he secured a bronze medal with a victory over Adam Kurak from Russia.

In 2018 he won two medals at the international championships. In April 2018 he got a bronze medal in the weight class up to 72 kg after a first round defeat against Adam Kurak with victories over Jan Zizka, Czech Republic and Geworg Sahakjan from Poland. At the world championship in his native Budapest, he defeated Tarek Aziz Benaissa from France, Joilson de Brito Ramos Junior from Brazil and Aik Mnazakanjan from Bulgaria in the same weight class and thus faced defending champion Frank Stäbler in the final. In an open fight he was defeated by just 1: 2 points and took 2nd place.
