Békés [ ˈbeːkeːʃ ] ( Slovak Békéš , Romanian Bichiș ; German Bekesch ) is a Hungarian city ​​in Békés county with almost 20,000 inhabitants (as of 2011). The main road 47 leads through the city .

Békés is located about 10 km north of the Békéscsaba county seat and about 190 km east of Budapest .

history

The city of Békés arose after the Hungarian conquest near the castle of the same name. From 1566 to 1695 the city was under Ottoman rule. During the Rákoczi uprising, the city suffered a lot from the fighting and did not recover until the 18th century. After flourishing in the first half of the 19th century, Békés lost the status of a town and did not regain it until 1973.
