Bad Weather - The Secret of the Past is a German television film that aired on October 3rd, 2016 on Erste and was produced by the Radical Movies Production company in the Harz region.

action

The geophysicist Dr. Leonard Gehra is supposed to help save the unprofitable mine of the entrepreneur Friedrich Türnitz. After a long time, Gehra is returning to Buchenrode, his birthplace in the Harz Mountains , near the former inner-German border , where his mother still lives. When he arrives at the mine, he meets his sandpit friend Kathrin, who has hired him to search for silver.

The Regina tunnel, which he is supposed to investigate, has been closed by the mining authorities since 1978 and this block will not be lifted because of the further risk of collapse . Leonard's father is said to have died there in a mine accident in June 1978.

When Leonard sends a robot to the Hohberg to be examined despite the blocking of a side entrance, he finds that nothing has collapsed there. The cracks in the pit are also incomplete. In his research, which now applies to the past, he comes across his father's Stasi file , which documents his death while fleeing the GDR and the betrayal by IM Brocken . Nobody wants to tell Leonard who this IM was, however. Only when Leonard is alone with Türnitz in the search for his son in the mine does he learn that he himself - as a child in the sandpit - had betrayed his planned escape to his friend Kathrin. Kathrin, for her part, had passed this on to IM Brocken ; neither of the children had been able to grasp the meaning of this information. It was only through Türnitz's influence that he was sent to a boarding school instead of a home, and his mother was able to leave the prison earlier.

Reviews

“The resolution is surprising in the complex drama that begins with a realistic description of the economic situation of the few remaining mines in Germany. It develops into a story of shattered hopes, failed escape, betrayal, adjustment, and civil disobedience. […] At the same time, Götz George, one of the greats of German acting, says goodbye to the screen with this film. With guys like Türnitz he played his way into the hearts of the audience. Türnitz is grumpy; a doer who has a soft and vulnerable side. For this role, the sensitive actor, who died unexpectedly in June after a short illness, broke with his plan to say goodbye to the camera. George couldn't have asked for better material for his last appearance than this drama about the complexity of life in dictatorships, about adaptation and quiet resistance. "

- Katharina Dockhorn : Badische Zeitung

“A nice role in a GDR drama from the past was then the last for Götz George. “Bad Weather”, written by Nicholas Haus and Michael Gebhart, tells a down-to-earth, only slightly dreamy story. The film has no illusions, but it cannot exclude anything either. Sometimes, you soon think yourself, you just have to go deeper into the mountain. [...] 'Bad Weather' is told calmly, remains a chamber play for long stretches, the staff of which need headlights from time to time. The story is devoted to the sinking world of the buddies. [...] A strangely optimistic ending, but there is one trick that you can't come up with in front of the main character, which is good. "

- Judith von Sternburg : Frankfurter Rundschau

“The dramaturgy of the Malocher opus about ore and pain [...] is conventional, in parts a bit athritic stiff. But that doesn't matter, the sweat and soot on the forehead of the body-hugging cast appear all the more honest. In any case, Götz George is in great shape again in this film, the broadcast of which was appropriately programmed to support the state on the day of German reunification. [...] The man in the mountain, the mountain of men, that's how we want to keep Götz George in mind. "

“That old calamity weighs down like an evil curse on Leo, Buchenrode and the 'Pyrite Building' oozes from every pixel of this film. This is not only ensured by the flashbacks. The fence post is constantly beckoning here. Bump into an old volume of poetry in abundance and read something about some kind of 'wolf of demons' to ominous music - pure showmanship with no deeper meaning. Does director Johannes Grieser believe that 'The Secret of the Past', so the subtitle, becomes all the more mysterious and dark the more you emphasize how mysterious and dark everything is? [...] The Harz appears as a suspended province: outdated, extinct, rather desolate. In the Buchenroder pub only backwoodsmen and eccentrics in post-reunification chic drink their beer. […] Impulsive, grumpy, a bit half-silly, George gives the Patriarchs… A routine last appearance, but nothing that one has not already seen of him in this way or similar. Apparently, the role was not intended to do anything of its own that went beyond it. "
