The Burtscheider Turnerbund Aachen 1908 eV , BTB Aachen for short , is a sports club from the Burtscheid district of the city of Aachen . Until 2014, the association was called DJK-Burtscheider Turnerbund 1908 eV , or DJK-BTB for short . The renaming took place with the exit from the DJK sports association .

With around 850 members (as of 2018), BTB Aachen is the second largest sports club in Burtscheid after the Burtscheid gymnastics club and is one of the larger sports clubs in the city of Aachen. The club is known nationwide for its handball department .

history

Founding years

The DJK-BTB was founded in 1908 by Josef Grümmer from the sports and gymnastics movement of the Catholic youth of the St. Johann-Baptist parish in Burtscheid and was headed by him until his death in 1950. At first there was only gymnastics, later fistball and hitball were added.

The world wars

During the First World War gymnastics had to be stopped. Many members fell as soldiers and the club's gymnasium served as a hospital. After the war, sports could only be resumed with great difficulty. The association joined the German Youth Force - Reich Association for Physical Exercise in Catholic Associations and often took part in the gymnastics and sports festivals that were popular at the time. Another sport was athletics.

From 1933 the National Socialists banned the denominational DJK sports association. The DJK-BTB initially suffered from harassment and later from being banned from all Catholic youth organizations outside the church, but did not completely cease its activities.

post war period

After the Second World War , Burtscheid was also in ruins. The gymnasium and meeting rooms were destroyed by bombs and play and gymnastics equipment was no longer available. However, the remaining members of the club managed to rebuild the DJK-BTB. When a sports field in Burtscheid was opened for gaming in 1949, the new sporting focus on handball emerged, initially practiced as field handball .

Contemporary history

In the following years the women and girls in the DJK-BTB also did sport and gymnastics. This department, now partially renamed Fitness, still exists today. Gymnastics was gradually discontinued, with the children's gymnastics department at least existing until the turn of the millennium. The fishing department founded in 1967 was active in the DJK-BTB until 2016, when its members left to found their own club. From the senior sports department, which was established in 1976, the hiking group for senior citizens, which is still active today, emerged as a non-independent department. From 1995 to the end of 2018 there was also a martial arts department with the sport of ju-jutsu .

Current sports departments

Handball

Handball has played the dominant role in the club since the 1970s. Around two thirds of the association's members belong to this department. In 2018, eight senior and around 20 youth teams took part in local and regional league games. The BTB Aachen is one of the few clubs in the Middle Rhine handball association that has teams in all age groups.

The 1st men's team, which has been playing under the team name Bandits since 2002 , plays in the handball regional league North Rhine , the fourth highest class , after being promoted in May 2018 . The club's teams also play in three youth classes in the Regionalliga Nordrhein.

Handball successes

Between 1971 and 1979 field handball in the DJK-BTB experienced its first high point when the first men's team in the Regionalliga, the second highest class at the time, competed against well-known opponents from all over North Rhine-Westphalia. With the introduction of indoor handball, this sport continued to be primarily pursued in the club, but the men played for almost two decades without any notable sporting success in the national or association league.

Finally, in the mid-1990s, youth work was intensified with the modern concept of the New Handball Generation . Athletic successes came first in youth handball, later also in women and men. The first men's team with self-trained players from the regional league (2000/01) rose twice in a row to the major league (2002/03) in order to compete for four seasons in the Regionalliga West (third league) between 2005 and 2009 . The BTB men made it into the 2nd round of the DHB Cup twice ( 2004/05 and 2007/08 ), three times in the 1st round ( 2001/02 , 2008/09 and 2019/20 ). In 2019 they reached the final of the German Amateur Cup .

The first women's team made it to the Regionalliga West in 2009/10 .

Known players

Some of the children and young people trained at BTB Aachen were later successful in professional handball. These include the former Bundesliga professionals Matthias Flohr (DHB national team, Champions League winner and German champion with HSV Hamburg ), David Breuer and Andreas Heyme . David's younger brother Simon Breuer's path led as a handball player and interim player-coach at TV Korschenbroich to the 2nd Bundesliga ; In 2018 he returned to the BTB for the end of his career. Erik Wudtke , who had also started his career at BTB, later moved to MT Melsungen (2001-2005) in the 2nd Bundesliga. He now works as a youth trainer for the DHB .

In addition to the handball department, the club has other popular sports departments in the following sports:

  • Badminton: a team that has participated in league games since 2012
  • fitness
  • Gymnastics (2 subgroups: women and mixed group)
  • volleyball

In cooperation with neighboring social institutions, the BTB offers innovative, inclusive sports offers for children and young people with and without disabilities. These are u. a. involved in the BTB sports week, which the club organized for the 35th time in 2018.
