Wilmer Alicea (Baby Rasta) (born October 11, 1976 in Hato Rey ) and Samuel Gerena (Gringo) (born July 3 or December 31, 1978 in Hato Rey) are a reggaeton duo from Puerto Rico . They became known for their title El Carneval . The two originally called themselves Eazy Boyz .

Career

At the age of 12 and 10, the two started their careers and were two of the first reggaeton artists together with DJ Playero and Vico C. However, at this point they were not seen publicly. In 1992, between the ages of 16 and 14, reggaeton became very popular in Puerto Rico. Due to the duo's obscene and vulgar lyrics, the Puerto Rican government tried to keep the two off the music. In return, they released songs critical of the government together with the musician Tempo .

In 1998 they released their first album, New Prophecy .

After that they only appear on compilation albums for a while until they finally released their second album Fire Live in 2003, which sold better than their debut album. They quickly made their way through so-called Tiraeras , in German Disstrack's first enemies, because they insulted other artists with their texts. One of these Tiraeras was directed against the duo Lito & Polaco and Pina Records . Nevertheless, they quickly became known in the underground scene and their concerts were sold out. Contributing to this was that Baby Rasta was good at writing romantic texts, while Gringo received attention because of his rapper skills.

In 2004 they achieved their breakthrough thanks to the worldwide spread of reggaetón with the album Sentenciados . To this day it is considered one of the best albums in the genre. It contains, among other things, their hit El Carneval .

Separation and solo careers

In December 2004, the duo split because Gringo felt their producer would pay more attention to Baby Rasta. As a result, Baby Rasta apparently dissed his former singing partner on his live shows. Baby Rasta gained fame through appearances on the albums of various artists. His single Hay de Mí made it into the Billboard Top 100. He also appeared on Daddy Yankee's song Somos de Calle .

Gringo's solo album El Independiente was released in March 2007. Baby Rasta had released his first solo album entitled La Última Risa in 2006.

reunion

At the end of 2007 they performed together again for the first time at a concert. Gringo explained that the two were El Duo De Historia . However, Wisin y Yandel also claim this title for themselves. This rekindled a long -established Tiraera between the two artist groups.

Confrontations with other artists

Baby Rasta y Gringo were involved in numerous disputes with other artists of the genre, including Lito & Polaco , Héctor y Tito , Don Omar , Ivy Queen and Wisin y Yandel . In the remix of Daddy Yankee's song Somos de Calle , the Dominican singer Vakero Baby Rasta accuses the New York- based Dominican working class of racism . Baby Rasta had previously claimed these have no class. Baby Rasta then appeared on Dominican radio and made it clear that it was a misunderstanding, but he also did not apologize. The duo also announced that they love their Dominican followers and appreciate their support.

On March 3, 2010, baby Rasta was shot after leaving a Carolina studio where he was working on an album. According to the police, the perpetrators shot over 100 bullets from a car before they could escape undetected.
