The vehicles of the genus XIV , 1868 genus IVa , the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways were passenger train - locomotives .

Following the example of the Swiss Northeast Railway , locomotives of this type were procured from 1866. The machines were intended for the slower passenger trains and lower-quality transport services. The simple and cheap locomotives had a relatively high pulling power and were therefore used for various purposes. This was mainly due to the high friction mass of 27 t. Despite the large wheel diameter, the locomotive was also suitable for freight trains. On a gradient of 1.5 per mille, a train weighing 1110 t reached a speed of 45 km / h.

The first locomotives were used for freight train services on the route from Heidelberg to Bruchsal and for passenger trains and mixed trains on the Odenwaldbahn . The locomotives of the later deliveries were then also used by Karlsruhe and in southern Baden.

From 1880 to 1886 all vehicles were converted into tank locomotives . During this conversion, the locomotives were equipped with a new Belpaire boiler. The last vehicles were taken out of service around 1900 .

No. 191 as a tank locomotive

The vehicles were delivered in three series. The first series 1866/1867 was supplied by Grafenstaden and had a Crampton type boiler with a steam dome on the front boiler section. The frame consisted of rolled double T-bars with a central boiler support and fork plates. The outboard engine had a Stephenson control. The drive took place on the rear coupling axle. The cab was fully developed. The following delivery from the Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe in 1867 and 1868 was constructed in the same way.

The third series delivered in 1870 had Belpaire kettles and a solid sheet metal frame.

The vehicles were equipped with type 2 T 5.67 tenders .
