The train station Delle ( French Gare de Delle ) is the train station of the French commune of Delle in the Territoire de Belfort department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . Since 1872, the station opened in 1868 as a border station to Switzerland . In 1992, passenger traffic on the Belfort – Delle railway line was discontinued by the SNCF , and since 1995 no passenger trains have operated on the cross-border section of the Delémont – Delle railway line . In 1993, freight traffic on the French section to Delle ended. Finally, in 1996, the cross-border section was completely shut down and dismantled by SBB , Delle station lost most of its tracks and was without traffic. After the commissioning of the LGV Rhin-Rhône with the Belfort-Montbéliard TGV station , demands arose for the station and the route to be reopened in order to ensure connections to the TGV. In 2006, the SBB resumed passenger train services to Delle. On December 6, 2018, the previously electrified Belfort – Delle railway was reactivated for passenger traffic .

history

On June 29, 1868, the Compagnie Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) opened the Montbéliard – Audincourt – Morvillars – Delle line , which on September 23, 1872 ran through the Chemin de fer Porrentruy – Delle (PD) with the Porrentruy - Boncourt - Delle got her connection to Switzerland . From Delémont it should have been extended to Lucerne as the Jura-Gotthard Railway , but this project did not materialize.

extensive traffic in Delle station before electrification

On August 13, 1877, the Compagnie de l'Est (EST) opened the Belfort – Morvillars (–Delle) line . With the completion of the Delémont – Porrentruy line of the Chemins de fer du Jura bernois (JB), Delle became the most northerly and most important border station between Switzerland and France , as it enabled the continuous trains between Paris and Zurich to bypass the German section via Mulhouse , which had been in place since 1871 . This merger with the rest of the Swiss standard gauge network also marked the beginning of the upswing in rail traffic via the Delle border station.

The electrical operation of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) under 15 kV 16⅔ Hz alternating current began on the Delémont – Delle line on May 15, 1933. The short section between the state border and Delle train station was also electrified by the SBB.

After the Second World War , Switzerland and France agreed to build a new border station in Delle in 1948. On the French side, however, a downturn set in, the last two-lane section Morvillars – Delle was reduced to one track in 1953 due to savings. The SNCF finally refrained from the intended electrification in 1957, instead the line to Basel SNCF was electrified, to which a large part of the traffic was shifted. The new border station in Delle was opened against all odds in 1967.

Over time, Delle gradually lost its importance compared to the electrified rail border crossings in Basel, Les Verrières and Vallorbe . The last through trains between Delémont and Belfort were abandoned on September 26, 1992 and the Belfort – Delle line was closed by the SNCF for passenger traffic. Cross-border freight traffic on the Boncourt – Delle section was discontinued by the SBB on June 30, 1993, and in the same year the SNCF also completely shut down the Morvillars – Delle section.

With the timetable change on May 27, 1995, the SBB stopped operating the Delle station from the Swiss side. With the discontinuation of passenger traffic, the Boncourt – Delle section was shut down and de-electrified on June 1, 1996. Since the former border station at Delle was now useless, almost the entire track system of the spacious station was dismantled in 1996 and 1997.

reactivation

Delle station as the terminus in 2015

Since December 8, 2006, after an eleven and a half year interruption, SBB trains have been running again between Boncourt and Delle. This was the first symbolic step to reactivate the Belfort – Delle line.

For timetable change in December 2018, the route Belfort-Delle was reactivated and thus made the connection from Porrentruy to Belfort possible again. At the Belfort-Montbéliard TGV train station there is also a connection to the TGV network. The route was renewed for this purpose.

traffic

Previous connections

In addition to international passenger trains, freight trains from France in particular ran via Delle, as the old access to Basel led through Alsace and thus through German territory. In order to avoid the additional customs treatment, trains were preferably routed via Delle to Delémont and on to Basel. With the opening of the Grenchenberg tunnel in 1915, the route between Delémont and Biel was also significantly shortened.

Current connections

RegioExpress trains have been running every hour between Delle, Porrentruy , Delémont and Biel / Bienne since the 2014 timetable . Since the 2019 timetable, these have started at Meroux station (TGV) .
