The Küchwald station is an operating point of the Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz railway line and the lines to Wechselburg , Obergrüna and Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf that used to branch off here . It is located in the north of the Saxon city of Chemnitz and extends mainly in the Furth district , to a lesser extent in the Borna-Heinersdorf districts (including the platform and its access) and Schloßchemnitz . It is named after the inner-city recreation and forest area Küchwald , on the north-eastern side of which it is located. The name Chemnitz Küchwald station is used in tourist traffic .

Today, the station serves primarily to supply the Chemnitz-Nord thermal power station with fuel for goods traffic and to develop the residential areas on both sides of the railway systems for passenger traffic.

history

In the 1880s, the existing train stations in Chemnitz were no longer sufficient for the greatly increased freight traffic. In addition to an urgently needed rail link for the numerous industrial companies in the north of the city, there was also no efficient marshalling yard. Initially, the intention was to lay the marshalling yard roughly on the then largely flat site of today's Küchwald station. Sufficient building land was available here between the Küchwald, which belonged to Chemnitz and the then still independent villages Borna , Glösa and Furth , but the station would have been away from the main traffic direction Dresden – Zwickau – Reichenbach. The steeply sloping area south of the workshop station in Hilbersdorf was therefore chosen as the final location . The Kieritzsch – Chemnitz line, like the Riesa – Chemnitz line, received a direct connection to the Hilbersdorf station, which is to be built .

View from the platform, which was put into operation in 2018, of the southern station area. In the middle of the picture are the two tracks of the Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz line, which are brought together in the background to form one track in the direction of Chemnitz Hbf. Immediately to the left of it is the planum of the former connection to the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf train station . The associated zero kilometer board has remained on site.

In 1902 the Küchwald plant was opened together with the Hilbersdorf marshalling yard and the connecting railway. A Küchwald branch was set up at the mouth of this connecting route . The railway line in the Chemnitz valley from Wechselburg, which opened in 1902, was also integrated here.

In July 1901, construction of the Küchwald – Obergrüna industrial line began, and it went into operation on December 17, 1903.

In some cases, Küchwald also took on train formation tasks . Local freight to Chemnitz-Altendorf , Limbach and in the direction of Chemnitztal was distributed from here, and bottlenecks at the Hilbersdorf marshalling yard could also be intercepted, especially for goods traffic to and from the north.

On the morning of November 25, 1906, a freight train coming from Leipzig drove into the branch at Küchwald on the flank of a freight train from Chemnitz to Wüstenbrand. Fog and disregard of a signal were given as the cause. 14 cars derailed, one car fell onto the lower-lying passenger train from Chemnitz main station in the direction of Leipzig.

The station reached its greatest expansion with the commissioning of the Chemnitz-Nord thermal power station in 1962. Since then, a large part of the track system has belonged to the power station operator's newly constructed connecting line. In addition, Küchwald station has since been the destination and departure station of numerous block trains. At peak times, 200 incoming and outgoing wagons a day were not uncommon. VEB Stahlgießerei with its industrial railway was also an important freight customer during the times of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

Traffic has decreased significantly since 1990. With the closure of the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf marshalling yard in 1999 and the associated closure of the connecting line on August 31, 1999, the Küchwald station also lost its importance. The line from Wechselburg to Chemnitz-Glösa was closed in 2002, the remaining line between Küchwald and Chemnitz-Glösa is still used to operate the Chemnitz-Nord thermal power station . In 2004 the line to Grüna was shut down, in October 2006 the connection at Küchwald station was dismantled.

From the mid-1980s, the control and safety technology in Küchwald station was modernized. Form signals were replaced by light signals and a new central interlocking was put into operation. Construction of today's B1 interlocking began in 1988; on November 5, 1991, it was put into operation together with R2 interlocking. The previous old signal boxes B1, W2 and W3 were closed. W2 was demolished in 2003.

The Küchwald station was not used for passenger traffic until the timetable change in December 2018. All passenger trains from Leipzig or Neukieritzsch as well as from Wechselburg to Chemnitz only passed through the station. Since December 5, 2018, the station has been served every hour by the C13 Burgstädt – Chemnitz line of the Chemnitz City Railway . In contrast to this, the train station was served by RegionalExpress RE 6 to and from Leipzig from May 23, 2019 and until September 19, 2019, as the railway line to the main train station was completely closed due to construction work on the Chemnitz Valley Viaduct. For this purpose, the existing platform was provisionally extended in advance for the locomotive-hauled wagon trains. The rail replacement bus stop was on the other side of the railway line, the walk was around 450 meters, u. a. through the Irrbornweg tunnel. During this period, the local transport line C13 was operated entirely from Burgstädt to Chemnitz Hauptbahnhof as a rail replacement service and did not serve the Küchwald stop.

outlook

Depending on the duration of the lignite supply contracts and the depreciation period of the current generating blocks, lignite combustion in the neighboring combined heat and power plant in the north is to be terminated by 2028 at the latest, according to information from its current operator Eins Energie in Sachsen GmbH & Co. KG from 2017. From 2022, 20 gas-fired, decentralized combined heat and power plants will gradually take over the district heating and electricity production of the power plant throughout the city. A further decline in the importance of Küchwald station in rail freight traffic is therefore to be expected.

Today's operations

Citylink multiple units of the CityBahn Chemnitz in March 2019 on the platform, ready to depart towards Burgstädt.

The station is served by signal box B1, signal box R2 is not manned, but can be switched on if necessary. The station is the destination of coal trains from Profen , lime trains from Rübeland and, sporadically, mineral oil trains or the starting point for plaster trains to Großkorbetha .

Upon arrival in Küchwald, the coal and lime trains are pushed onto the unloading bridge by shunting locomotives of the V 60 East , V 60 West or V 23 series from AHG (formerly owned by Stadtwerke Chemnitz ), from where the goods are transported directly to the power plant via a conveyor belt . The boiler and plaster trains are loaded and unloaded in the station of the heating and power station located below and shunted by the diesel locomotives mentioned above. Since the Wechselburg – Küchwald railway line is closed and dismantled from the Chemnitz-Glösa station and the direction of travel has to be changed on the Chemnitz Bridge, the trains are driven in several parts up to Küchwald and reassembled into whole trains there.

The Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz line has two tracks in the immediate vicinity of the station. However, since there is only one platform, the right-hand track is used by the trains on the C13 lines in both directions. The other passenger trains usually run on the right-hand platform in the direction of travel. South of Küchwald train station, the line continues on a single track towards Chemnitz Hauptbahnhof, north of Küchwald train station in the direction of Neukieritzsch, double-track. The sidings are now only connected to the line from the Neukieritzsch direction.

Passenger transport systems

Signs on the platform. At DB Station & Service AG and in the relevant timetable media, the term Chemnitz Küchwald is used, at DB Netz AG still only Küchwald .

With financial support from the city of Chemnitz in the amount of 400,000 euros, DB Station & Service AG built an access point for travel. The outer platform with a length of 90 meters and a platform height of 55 centimeters is located on the right-hand track of the Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz line, starting at kilometer 58.561. In the final state, access should be possible both south of Irrbornweg and north of the residential area Rilkestrasse. The passenger transport systems were put into operation on December 5, 2018, shortly before the 2018/2019 timetable change. At the time of commissioning, only the southern access from Irrbornweg was completed. The northern access from the residential area Rilkestrasse was completed and released for use in summer 2019.

The commissioning was preceded by several years of coordination between the city of Chemnitz and DB Station & Service AG. In this context, there were repeated delays. At the beginning of 2016, the schedule change 2017/2018 was announced for commissioning at the earliest.
