Offenbach (Main) Ost is a rail station Part of Offenbach's main railway station in the Hessian town of Offenbach am Main . Today it is used exclusively for S-Bahn traffic.

history

Offenbach's Ostbahnhof was opened on November 15, 1873 as a station on the Bebraer Bahn . On October 30, 1896, the Rodgaubahn (Offenbach – Reinheim line) was connected here. The S-Bahn line S1 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Main has been running on the Rodgaubahn since 2003 to Rödermark - Ober-Roden , where there is a connection to the Dreieichbahn to Dieburg , which opened in 1905 .

In 1929 the station received a new reception building . The cubic brick building was designed in the forms of early modernism and one of the few examples of this style in train station construction. It was a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . In the course of the construction of the Südmainische S-Bahn , this station building was demolished.

On May 23, 1995, the S-Bahn line Frankfurt Schlachthof – Hanau was opened, which runs through the Offenbach City Tunnel and runs parallel to the existing long-distance railway line between Offenbach (Main) Ost and Hanau. Since then, only the S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S8 and S9 have been running in Offenbach (Main) Ost.

Infrastructure

Offenbach (Main) Ost train station

The station has three platform tracks that are regularly used in S-Bahn traffic. The long-distance tracks of the Hanau – Frankfurt line north of the S-Bahn tracks do not have a platform and are separated from the S-Bahn tracks by a soundproof wall.

At the western head of the station, two tracks lead into the Offenbach City Tunnel , one track leads to Offenbach Central Station . At the eastern head of the station, the S-Bahn lines branch off at the same level in the direction of Hanau and Offenbach-Bieber. Between the tracks on the line to Hanau there is a parking facility for S-Bahn trains, in which numerous trains from Frankfurt ending in Offenbach Ost turn.

Todays situation

Rail transport

The station serves exclusively the S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S8 and S9. The trains of the regional and long-distance drive without stopping through the train station.

All S-Bahn trains run every 30 minutes. During rush hour , this basic cycle is compressed to a 15-minute cycle. Since the S8 and S9 run on almost the same route, the basic cycle there is generally 30 minutes, with both complementing each other to a 15-minute cycle. The S8 only runs to Hanau during rush hour, otherwise it ends or starts in Offenbach Ost. The S1 starts occasionally in Offenbach Ost and then only goes to Frankfurt-Höchst or Hochheim. During night traffic from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m., the station is only served by the S8 line.

Until June 13, 2010 the rush hour trains of the S2 drove to Offenbach (Main) Hauptbahnhof, since then they have also been using the Offenbach City Tunnel and the Frankfurt S-Bahn Tunnel .

future

After the commissioning of the south Main S-Bahn, the city of Offenbach am Main aimed to functionally merge the main train station and Offenbach Ost station in order to link bus, S-Bahn, regional and long-distance traffic there. These plans were rejected again, however, because the Deutsche Bahn referred to the easy accessibility of Frankfurt from Offenbach and to the well-used Hanau – Frankfurt railway line .

The renovation would improve the public transport situation in Offenbach, but the renovation would be so complex and expensive that it would be cheaper to modernize Offenbach Central Station instead of expanding Offenbach Ost station.
